- Examines groundbreaking experiments that show the possibility that plants respond to people's thoughts.
- In Search of examines whether plants are capable of communicating with human beings. It looks at Marcel Vogel who claims that plants are capable of communication and Dorothy Retallack who claims that plants respond to music. It examines Kirlian photography of plants and Cleve Backster's use of a polygraph on plants and yogurt bacteria.—Shatterdaymorn
- The possibility of communication with plants and bacteria is explored. Marcel Vogel, a research chemist at the University of San Diego uses sensitive equipment to sense emission of signals from plants. Dorothy Retallack, a Colorado plant researcher and musician set up an experiment to test the response of plants to music. Two plots of plants were set up next to each other with every attempt to equalize their treatment with respect to wate3r, humidity, temperature, and light. In one chamber, pleasant light classical music was played over a speaker. In the other, acid rock music was played. The plants thrived and leaned toward the pleasant music while the plants bent away and died back on the acid rock side. Kirlian photographer Kendall L. Johnson placed leaves on unexposed film to reveal electrical discharge patterns when a voltage is supplied. He had photographic evidence of how the discharge patterns change when a leaf is touched by a human finger. Lastly, polygraph expert Cleve Backster uses pen traces to suggest that plants can feel our pain. The pen trace changed when he scraped the knuckle of a laboratory assistant. When the electrodes were placed into a yogurt sample, the trace showed a strong deflection shortly after milk had been added. He claimed that the bacterial cultures in it were responding to the offering of nutrients that the milk brought.—Garon Smith
