Unusual episode looks at the controversial(and perhaps little known) case of Bishop Pike, who was a dedicated but troubled believer in the Catholic Church who found himself at odds with its beliefs and teachings, which he considered out-of-date in some ways. He was both promoted quickly, yet often ostracized as well. He was popular in the turbulent period of the 1960's, at did attract young people to the church, but he also had a troubled personal life, with a divorce, and later suicide of his son, whom he used a medium to try and contact. His strange death in the desert in 1969 ended his story, but his many books and ideas continue to exist.

This is a very interesting episode of In Search Of... exploring the life and times of Bishop James Pike one of the most controversial clergymen of the twentieth century. He was a brilliant man who graduated from Yale and served with Naval Intelligence during World War II. He questioned church doctrines and was almost thrown out as a heretic. He did everything from marching with Martin Luther King to becoming involved with the spiritualist movement (he wanted to communicate with his son who had killed himself). In the end, Pikes troubled journey took him to the deserts of Jerusalem where he wandered through the desert and died of exposure. This episode does a masterful job telling of this troubled man's life and one hoped he finally found the peace he wanted.

In Search Of... "Bishop Pike" (1982)
Apparently at one time Bishop Pike was a well-known figure among the Catholic Church, although he ended up battling them over certain beliefs. This episode takes a look at his life and bizarre death to the controversial figure. I must admit that I had never heard of this guy but his story was a fascinating one to say the least. I enjoyed seeing how he went up against the Catholic Church before it appears he began to lose his mind. Fans of the series will probably find this to be a weird story to include but it's certainly an entertaining and fascinating episode.

Wonders why Bishop Pike was made. The viewer learns about the controversial Bishop Pike. Divorced, left the Catholic Church, went to other Church. Son commits suicide. Bishop Pike life was a mess and full of disbelief. One wonders why and or what Pike believed in? Represents the troubled times in the 1960s. A strange death in the desert. A troubled man full of doubts and a disjointed life. Forgets a book dead line and writes an entire book in one day! Bishop Pike life was one of disjoints events ideas. Doubts about Marry! Makes a Astor- naught glass work for a church window etc. Got nothing out of Bishop Pike episode. 3 out of 10. Not one of my favorites.
