Fabled Outlaw
AaronCapenBanner30 September 2014
First episode of the sixth season examines the truth behind the legend of fabled outlaw Jesse James, who was said to have robbed from the rich, and gave back to the poor, targeting only the hated banks and railroads that so many of Jesse's people were in insurmountable debt to. Historians debate the reasons why James was so celebrated, and there is a catchy little ballad sung about him during the credit sequences. Of course, he and his gang were still armed robbers, and the authorities put a huge bounty on him, which was collected on when Jesse James was shot in the back and killed...or was he? Stylish and poignant episode much like earlier 'Butch Cassidy' is a similar treat for western fans.

In Search Of... Jesse James (1981)

History tells you that Bob Ford shot Jesse James in the back but did they really kill him or was this a way to cover-up and let James escape and live a free life? Season six gets off to a pretty good start, although there's no question that this episode should have been much better. Way too much time is spent telling us who James was and this here just really wasn't needed and especially since the most interesting aspect is the man who claimed to be James. I really wish the episode had dug more into his claims as well as other's claims. With that said, there's no doubt that this episode still delivers a lot of fun and it worth watching.

Episode: B+

Warning: Spoilers
More of history In Search of episode. There is some investigation at the ending! In Search of Jesse James unfolds where Jesse was from and the times Jesse lived in. Jesse and brother Frank were in the civil war in a Southern division, which specialized in gorilla tactics and bank robberies. After the war Jesse made easy money in the war ravaged south as a bank robber, which evolved to trains etc. In Search of Jesse James goes into the music and folklore of Jesse James. The audience goes into the modern times of the Missouri, the people and experts. Then we learn of how Jesse was assassination by Rob Ford! The last moments where counted down! Was it Jesse who was assassinated? Did Jesse survive? The conspiracy theories abound in the ending of the Jesse James episode. Kind of interesting! Bit lame with the conspiracy theories. 6 out of 10.
