Who Discovered America?
AaronCapenBanner29 September 2014
Intriguing episode once again focused on China, this time the contention that Chinese explorers were the first to discover the Americas 1000 years before Christopher Columbus, as there is some evidence of Chinese accounts pointing to this, as well as the coincidence that Chinese faces can be found in certain Native American cultures, where it should be impossible. Of course, this is a controversial and still unproven theory, but as is pointed out, even if true, Columbus was indeed the first to create a permanent foreign settlement there, thus insuring him a place in history.

A nice companion piece with 'The Great Wall Of China'.

One of the better episodes!

Warning: Spoilers
One of the better episodes. The Chineses Explorers examines the possibility that the Chinese explored North and Centeral America a 1000 years before Columbus. Evidence in oral teachings, architecture which could have Chinese influence is examined. Mayan calendar is close to the Chinese, and there is Chinese faces and other Chinese culture artifacts in Mayan ruins. Coincidence, or something more? In search The Chinese Explorers has reenactments, experts, narration, and strong physical evidence meld into a intriguing episode. One of the stronger argument I have seen in the In Search of series. I believe the Chinese explorers existed. 9 out of 10. Worth watching. But then again I could be wrong.

In Search Of... "The Chinese Explorers" (1981)

This episode takes a look at the possibility that Christopher Columbus wasn't the first to discover America and perhaps that it was the Chinese. The episode also takes a look at Central America and what influence possible Chinese travelers had on it. This here certainly isn't one of the greatest episodes from the series but there's enough entertainment here to where fans of the show should enjoy it. The subject is certainly an interesting one and especially the stuff dealing with the Mayan people and the possible influence of the Chinese.

Episode: B+
