A Tragic Life
AaronCapenBanner30 September 2014
The tragic life of John Merrick, nicknamed the elephant man, is examined, from the time he was found by a kindly doctor as he was being callously exploited as a carnival sideshow attraction, to his time in his hospital, where he was looked after for three years until his death. Was his death a suicide, or a desperate attempt to sleep upright, since he was so horribly disfigured by his disease that his misshapen head could not be lied upon. It also looks at modern people who have the same disease, and how they live their lives in a culture where beauty is so highly prized. Poignant and heartfelt episode features excellent acting, direction, and period atmosphere, though perhaps doesn't spend enough time there....otherwise, superb.

Poor John Merrick
dtucker866 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Never before or since have I seen a more perverted disgusting specimen of humanity then poor John Merrick. Those are the words of Frederick Treves when he first saw "The Elephant Man". This episode came out a year after David Lynch's classic film so it is somewhat anti climactic but it is still interesting. There are a number of wonderful reenactments including "interviews" with Doctor Treves and Merrick's nurse. Nuerofibromotosis (I hope I spelled that right) is what Merrick suffered from and this episode features other victims of the disease even though their disfigurements are NOTHING like Merricks. I was so angry when a woman who suffered from it said she had an unpleasant encounter with a group of cruel children who called her "Mrs Merrick". I was also saddened by the cause of Merricks death. Because of the large size of his head he had to sleep sitting up and one night he laid back and literally suffocated. Doctor Treves said that he died in a pitiful effort to be like "normal people".

Sad

Warning: Spoilers
A sad story! The story of The Elephant Man who suffered from a horrific disease was examed. Ostracized, in pain was left to be a side show attraction a horrid life as The Elephant Man. Hard time in Old England with no safety net, a doctor tried to help the sick man. The mystery about the man is revealed. I had a hard time watching this when I was a child. Doctors explain the disease. Science shows the effects on arms etc. From bad to mild each case is different! In Search of interviews people with the disease. Explains the difficulties. No I am not contagious etc. Pulls the heart strings. Why is what I asked watching this. If episode does not effect you? Nothing would. 6 out of 10

In Search Of... "The Elephant Man" (1981)

The troubled life of John Merrick is the focus of this episode, which was probably making an appearance in season six thanks to the David Lynch movie being released the previous year. The first portion of the episode deals with Merrick and the doctor who helped him towards the end of his life. From here we meet a few people from today who suffer from the same illness. For the most par this is an entertaining episode but there's no question that you're not going to learn anything new. The episode is an entertaining one and the re-enactments are decent but coming a year after the Lynch film probably made them seem a bit more boring at the time of their release compared to today.

Episode: B+
