Doomed Dirigible
AaronCapenBanner29 September 2014
Memorable episode takes a serious, no-nonsense look at the tragedy surrounding the explosion of the German dirigible Hindenburg on its maiden flight as it was about to land in Lakehurst, New Jersey in early May, 1937. Something caused the hydrogen-fueled blimp to explode, killing many passengers, crew, and those on land. Was it in fact a horrible accident, or could it have been sabotage, as such a warning was given before the flight took off. Features in full the famous news footage with the broadcaster lamenting the disaster unfolding in front of him, to chilling effect. The incident doomed the zeppelin company, and now blimps are filled with the much safer element helium.

In Search Of... "The Hindenburg Mystery" (1981)

As weak as season five has been, this episode here is a very good throwback to some of the best that the series had to offer. This here takes a look at the Hindenburg disaster and the first half of the episode takes a look at how it was built, the various political issues that came from it and then we learn about its final voyage. The second portion of the episode deals with the various theories on why the fire and explosion happened. If you're a fan of the series or the subject itself then you'll certainly be entertained by this episode, which does a great job at telling the story but we also get interviews with a couple people who were on the ground during the explosion. Of course, the actual footage of the event is still as breathtaking and shocking as the day it was filmed.
