Booth Shot Lincoln
AaronCapenBanner30 September 2014
Historical based episode takes on the controversy surrounding the tragic assassination of U.S President Abraham Lincoln, who was shot down by John Wilkes Booth while watching a play in 1865. Booth escaped, but had an injured leg, and the people who helped along the way, and also plotted not only the president's death, but much of his cabinet's as well, were later arrested, tried, and executed, but some maintain that Booth really did not die in a barn fire, but escaped again to live a long life, though most historians consider that ridiculous. That Booth shot Lincoln is not in question, but who else helped him do so still remains unknown. Most interesting and sober-minded entry, which also was the subject of a same-titled film in 1977.

The Lincoln Conspiracy

Warning: Spoilers
I work in a history museum and part of my tour deals with Lincoln. I always tell my visitors, as someone points out on this episode, that Lincoln is our most beloved President today but during his life he was also our most HATED President. John WIlkes Booth and many others viewed him as a tyrant like Hitler because of his supression of civil liberties and his freeing the slaves. This episode features some great reenactments (although the actor playing Booth wears a fright wig that makes him look more like Don King). One of those interviewed is Doctor John Lattmer who was also an expert on the Kennedy assassination as well.. He wrote a wonderful book called Lincoln and Kennedy. One of the similiarities between the deaths of these two Presidents is the fact that we will never know the truth behind their assassinations and that is also a great American tragedy.

More of a historical review than a mystery!

Warning: Spoilers
"In Search of the Lincoln Conspiracy" nothing special here! Lincoln Conspiracy is more a historical review than a mystery. For those viewers who know nothing or little about the Lincoln Conspiracy the episode will be educational. Several people where targeted in the conspiracy. There is some doubt all the collaborator would be found guilty in today's court of law. The last season was running low on material. The Lincoln Conspiracy shows how thin In Search of was for material! I did not mind The Lincoln Conspiracy. Would not watch The Lincoln conspiracy again. Blah, watch it one time and that's it attitude for this one. 5 out of 10. One of the lamer In Search of's.

In Search Of... "The Lincoln Conspiracy" (1981)

Everyone knows that John Wilkes Booth killed President Lincoln and a lot of people know that many others were found guilty and hanged because of conspiracy. This episode takes a look at a few alternate theories including if Booth killed himself instead of being shot by a soldier. Also discussed are the people who were arrested after the fact and if some of them might have been innocent while the real guilty party got away. This is certainly one of the better episodes in the series but there's nothing new that you're going to learn. The story itself is just one of the most captivating that you'll ever read or see so it makes sense that this episode would be so good.
