- A murder on holy ground has taken place in Amsterdam, and Lady Caterina sends in the mysterious Father Hugue, also known as "Sword Dancer", to investigate.
- Lady Caterina has sent Deputy Enforcer Father Hugue du Bateaux, a traveling priest known as "Sword Dancer" to Amsterdam to investigate the recent slaughter of several parish priests, their bodies drained of blood. The slaughter also worries the four ruling counts of Holland, Count Carel of Amsterdam, Count Guy of Bruges, Count D'Alsace of Brussels, and Count Memling of Antwerp, because they have no knowledge of the perpetrators and fear that the Vatican will blame it on them. In the race to discover the true culprits, it is learned that there was a witness to the slaughter, a young nun named Sister Agnes, but she has no memory of what happened. Carel sends his younger brother Pieter to abduct Agnes, but she is saved by Hugue, who slays Pieter. The next day, Carel sends the vampire's coachman Wilhelm to bring in both Agnes and Hugue. The vampires have designed a memory-retrieving device which they use on Agnes and subsequently learn that it was Memling who committed the slaughter. That evening, Carel arranges for a showdown, coliseum style, in which Hugue is forced to fight a savage lycanthrope. Knowing that Hugue's strength is in his sword, Agnes tosses it to him. Hugue successfully slays the wolf as well as the vampires of Amsterdam. When Caterina hears what Hugue has accomplished, she orders his return to the Vatican.
