I feel extremely privileged to have witnessed one of the concerts of Big Country's farewell tour in May 2000. It was at Rock City, Nottingham, a week or so before the 'final fling' at Glasgow. What a night THAT must have been! Thankfully this film exists so that future generations can see for themselves what an extraordinary band B.C. were. From the cataclysmic opening riffs of 'Harvest Home' right through to the last echoes of 'Fields of Fire', the pace never lets up. This band didn't stroll on stage, play their greatest hits and walk off again. They grabbed you with both hands, held you in an iron grip for two hours and eventually let you go, with your ears ringing from the most powerful live music I'd heard since the golden days of The Who. What's upsetting about the experience of viewing this video is, of course, the knowledge of Stuart Adamson's tragic suicide eighteen months later. His 'Stay alive!' farewell to the audience must rate as the most poignant valediction in music history. At least his work will live on - forever.
