With all the stupid that has recently infected our news feeds and such this past week, I’d be remiss to admit I didn’t at least try to find something comic-related to rant about today. I read about half of John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake’s Kros: Hallowed Ground graphic novel – but wouldn’t have anything cathartic to say about it as I’m numb from the dumb. I learned how to make my own salad dressing – but I doubt you’d really care about it or Whole 30. I read all the articles about how Justice League was getting some nifty reshoots to fix errant tonal problems – but again I digress: why sit here and rant about a movie that isn’t out yet, when our glorious leader took to the press and created a new villain for our weary nation!

So, Bill Maher crossed the line and got himself into hot water. Given the nature of his HBO show, Real Time, and his own proclivities as a satirist, maybe he should just have a hot tub on stage instead of a desk. It would suit him in many ways.
Recently, as part of an interview, Maher jokingly referred to himself as a “house ‘N’ word.” No, I’m not repeating the actual word here for a few reasons. A) I don’t want to pull a Maher; B) I don’t like the word. I won’t pretend I’ve never used it; I threw it around a bit as a kid in 1950s Chicago along with the “c” word, the “f” word, the “mf” and others of that ilk because I knew they were bad words, naughty words, and I was trying at those moments to pass myself off...

More than once over the years I’ve been approached by someone who says that they have a great idea for a story and that I should write it and then we split any money evenly. The problem with this (aside from the fact that the work is not even) is that I have plenty of ideas of my own that, for one reason or another, never get written. Having ideas isn’t the problem; executing them is.
Here are a few ideas I’ve had in my journal that haven’t seen the light of day.
Spectre/Batman Alt Worlds
An alternate DC Universe idea set back in the Thirties, we start with the Waynes getting gunned down in an alley, but this time young Bruce is killed as well. This sets off such a furor that something has to be done. Commissioner Gordon decides on someone from the...

Last weekend I was at the Geek’d Con in Rockford, Illinois. It was a small first time con and it had some things to work out, but over all it went okay.
I really enjoyed the fans but, for me, the big moment was when my niece, Julie Adams, showed up with her husband Rob and their three kids, Rachel, Hailey, and Ryan. They even sat in on the Q&A panel I did on Saturday and, bless ‘em, asked some questions themselves. And, as is typical with kids and especially kids who are relatives, a question or two were tough to answer.
The big one I was asked (by Hailey, as I recall) was, “Which of your characters is your favorite?” Deceptively simple, that question. “That’s like asking a parent which is their favorite child,” I replied, glancing at Julie and Rob. Both grimaced.

Last week I gave a review of the Suicide Squad movie. This week, I’m talking about my trip to NYC for the premiere.
I got in to the East Coast on 7/31 and stayed with my friends Tam and Kev English over in New Jersey, near to where I used to live. Tom Mandrake and Jan Duursema, who also live in the area, were going to be in town Sunday night before going on a trip so we all got together for a nice meal. Hilarity ensued.
Tom and Jan also gave me a box full of Kros: Hallowed Ground booty. This is stuff that will be going out to our subscribers and it is killer cool.
I took the train into Manhattan on Monday to join my old bud and oft-time editor and my date for the evening, the lovely and effervescent Mike Gold. We were meeting for a pre-festivities lunch.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it, don’t wait for it, just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men’s store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee. Or, it could be a listen to this Lynchian mixtape inspired by the massive cast list released for the new iteration of Twin Peaks, which has a surprising number of musicians along with actors.
This list includes, but is not limited to, Trent Reznor, Eddie Vedder, Sky Ferreia, and Sharon Van Etten, along with actors who also dabble in music such as Jennifer Jason Leigh, Monica Bellucci, and Richard Chamberlain. The songs are tailor-fitted to the mood of the show, a combination of the eerie, sad, dark, joyous, and full of life.

I love writing and I am so glad I’ve been able to make a living at it. I’m very thankful to all the fans and all the publishers who have enabled me to do that over the years.
The trick is in getting the work. There’s this malady known as “freelancer’s disease” which consists of a freelancer taking every gig offered because you’re afraid that if you turn down any, they will all go away. It’s not rational but it’s real and it’s how some freelancers wind up taking on too much work. I’ve been sick with that disease from time to time. To make a living from writing, though, depends on a publisher saying yes.

Halloween was yesterday (if you’re reading this on Sunday); a time of ghosts and ghouls and little children strong arming adults for candy under the threat of “tricks.” Oh, also when the Great Pumpkin rises from a really sincere pumpkin patch to bring toys and presents to good little children all around the world. Or so I have been told.
And, of course, it’s time for ghost stories and horror stories and tales of things that go bump in the night and I’ve told a few of those myself, notably Wasteland. My most successful foray into the genre, though, probably was the run I did on The Spectre with Tom Mandrake for DC Comics back in the 1990s.

"Prince of Darkness" may not be one of John Carpenter's better-remembered films, but it's become a cult classic among horror/Carpenter aficionados in the nearly three decades since its release. And if you're a fan who lives in Los Angeles, your loyalty is set to be rewarded with a very cool opportunity courtesy of Horror's Hallowed Grounds: a screening of the movie inside the actual church where it was filmed. This is location porn of the highest order, friends. According to the official post on Hhg's Facebook page, the screening (co-hosted by HorrorHound magazine and in association with East West Players and Visual Communications) will include "special guests and Q&A," a "tour of all interior and exterior locations used in the film with photo opportunities," "special prizes and giveaways" and a "courtyard reception with cash bar." Will John Carpenter be in attendance? Don't bet on it! But this is,...

They were startled to receive a distress signal from a supposedly decimated planet, but it was getting shot down by something on the surface of Dispater that really rattled the eclectic crew in the first issue of Roche Limit: Clandestiny. Taking place 75 years after the events of the five-issue Roche Limit series, this sequel storyline features new characters and fresh situations, but still retains the fantastic storytelling and gorgeous artwork of its predecessor. With Roche Limit: Clandestiny hitting comic shop shelves early next month, we caught up with writer Michael Moreci and artist Kyle Charles to discuss creating scares in space, returning to Dispater, the presence of androids, the possibility of a sixth issue in the Clandestiny story arc, and much more.
Your new comic book series, Roche Limit: Clandestiny, features a mind-bending mystery taking place 75 years after the events of the first Roche Limit story arc that wrapped up in February.

John Carpenter seems to be at odds with what he loves and what is expected of him. Early in his career, Carpenter made a science fiction film (Dark Star), a siege picture (Assault on Precinct 13), and then Halloween.
He speaks freely of his love of the science fiction genre, yet seemed to have been pushed into the horror realm because of Halloween, where he has made quite a name for himself. Prince of Darkness, is an interesting blend of elements of sci-fi and horror, with some lofty academic ideas to propel the characters through this macrocosmic drama.
Carpenter favorite Donald Pleasence, simply billed here as “Priest,” finds a key after the death of a colleague, which leads him to an ancient evil trapped in the basement of an old church. In this instance, “evil” has taken the form of a swirling green mass in a glass container. In an attempt to stop an impending,...

Just last month, we were excited to learn that industrial rock icon Trent Reznor will be re-assembling his legendary band Nine Inch Nails with an all-new lineup and a tour kicking off this summer. But that's not the only Trent event this year: this week, the experimental band How to Destroy Angels – a project Reznor founded with his wife Mariqueen Maandig, his fellow Golden Globe-winning composer Atticus Ross, and acclaimed visual artist Rob Sheridan – finally released their long-awaited full length album debut. After teasing us for two years with singles, EPs (the first self-titled release in 2010, followed by An Omen last fall) and some beautifully spooky music videos, they've made good on the ominous promise of those earlier experiments with a truly monolithic record that is equal parts ambient experimentation (in the vein of Nin's epic 1999 album The Fragile or their instrumental collection Ghosts I-iv) and dark, sultry electro-pop. While...

The last part of ’68: Scars came out last month, but fans of the zombie series don’t to wait long for a new issue. Next month, the first issue of the ’68: Jungle Jim will be published and it continues the story we first read in the 2011 one-shot.
I recently had a chance to talk with ’68‘s Mark Kidwell and Jay Fotos, who told me all about the upcoming mini-series, future plans, and upcoming events. We also have exclusive preview pages from ’68: Jungle Jim #1, and photos of life-sized ’68 zombies they created for convention appearances.
Things don’t seem to be getting any better in the world of ’68, even with trained soldiers going up against the undead. Will there ever be a turning point in this battle, or is the Us military spread too thin and hopelessly outnumbered?
Mark Kidwell: Let me begin to answer that with a quote...

This past week the cinema-loving world suffered a completely senseless and vicious tragedy. To lots of people, including myself, the movie theatre is a sacred place. Hallowed ground. We go there to escape the horrors of the real world, and now is a very important time to do just that.
In the days following the tragic shooting that took place in Aurora, Colorado, in which an absolutely insane cretin took the lives of several people and injured dozens more, it seems as if everyone has gone wild. People are afraid of going to the movies for fear of copycats. The usual vultures are looking to politicize the situation and point fingers, as if doing so could somehow start healing the wound left by this terrible incident. This has to stop.
The person who committed these heinous crimes didn't do so for any reason other than he's a mentally unstable and sick individual.

In the spring of 1991, Dave Grohl didn't want to work, he just wanted to bang on the drums all day, but he entered Sound City Studios with Krist Novoselic and Kurt Cobain and emerged a fully-formed grunge god.
Thus is the transformative power of one of the great recording houses of the modern rock era, and while it closed its doors as a commercial studio in May 2011, Foo Fighters frontman Grohl has announced (via AintItCool) that he will direct a documentary tale of how "Sound City" shaped Nirvana's breakthrough album, "Nevermind," and a slew of others.
The storied studio was integral in the birth of legendarily boss albums by Neil Young ("After the Gold Rush"), Fleetwood Mac ("Rumors"), Tom Petty ("Damn the Torpedos") and, um, Charles Manson, many of whom will appear in the doc to recount all the tracks (and lines) they did there. Not Manson, though.

Daniel Craig stars as a family man with a nightmare mortgage in "Dream House" (Sept. 30), the latest incarnation of the haunted habitation genre.
It's more than likely that a few time-honored cliches of the idiom will be conjured up again to give us a fright. You'd think the characters in these films would know the symptoms by now. But for those who still have trouble reading the ghost signs, here are nine warnings that should tell you not to bother unpacking.

What is it about the simple songs of our youth and joyful giggling of children that, with only a slight twist in context, become the creepiest, most demonic sounds in the universe? We may never know the answer. But one thing's for sure. If you're walking down a hallway and you hear "Ring Around the Rosie" being chanted by little voices behind a closed door,...

Chicago – “Gettysburg” and “Gods and Generals” have legions of hardcore fans who adored them when they first played in theaters and will love the new Blu-ray editions that feel like hardcover books more than your standard disc release. One has to admire the marketing machine at Warner Bros. who can tie these titles in to the 150th Commemoration of the Civil War and make them perfect Father’s Day gifts at the same time.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
“Gettysburg” and its prequel “Gods and Generals” barely made a dent at the box office (as epic period pieces rarely do) but I’ve always gotten the impression that they have very loyal audiences, the kind of old-fashioned men who would sit down and watch these two Blu-rays back-to-back and lose a whole day in their Civil War recreation.

Jaimie Alexander was a relative unknown before being cast as Asgardian warrior Sif in Marvel's adaptation of Thor, having appeared in a couple horror movies (Hallowed Ground, Rest Stop) and the TV show Kyle Xy. In an interview with Movieline, Alexander revealed that she was cast after auditioning via Skype.
I was probably one of the last few girls who went in to audition for the role of Sif. I had read about the project months and months in advance, and I said, "I’ve got to get in for this. I really want to get in for this." And then I did, and I literally just read with the casting director because [director] Kenneth Branagh was in Sweden at the time and couldn’t be there for the audition. Hallowed Ground (2007) was written and directed by David Benullo and it stars Jaimie Alexander as Liz Chambers, a young woman who ends up stranded in the small town of Hope due to car trouble. It seems as though Liz’s arrival in Hope was foretold a century before by a mad preacher who killed his “enemies” and placed them in a cornfield as scarecrows. Liz is an important part of the prophecy that foretells of the preacher’s rebirth. Now an entire town is looking for Liz so she can bring about the return of their preacher.
Okay, religious zealots and a cornfield….where have I seen that before? Oh right! It was already done with Stephen King’s Children Of The Corn (1984) which was re-made in 2009 after countless sequels—but I digress. So we’ve established that it’s been done before. Maybe go...

Grown Ups (DVD & Blu-ray)
In the tradition of The Big Chill, five childhood friends (Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider) reunite after 30 years to attend the funeral of their beloved youth basketball coach over the Fourth of July weekend. They all stay at the late coach’s lake house with their families in tow. Comedy ensues as they relive old times, tease each other, and try to show their kids how to have fun the old fashion way. The hilarious reunion shows them not only how different their lives have become, but how much they still have in common.

So, a new trailer for a new Scarecrow-horror movie called Husk is up and about. It's kind of just like every other Scarecrow-horror movie you've ever seen, but maybe not as good as Dark Night of the Scarecrow.
Because No scarecrow horror movie can ever beat Dark Night of the Scarecrow.
Husk seems to have atmosphere and some recognizable actors (you know, it has That Hot Guy from Harper's Island) and isn't absolutely vile at first glance. It certainly looks better than, say, Scarecrow, Scarecrows, Night of the Scarecrow, Hallowed Ground, or Revenge of the Scarecrow.
I'm just kind of disappointed because, well, I've seen like 90 scarecrow-horror films, and none of them are that good, and here is After Dark pretending this is some kind of original idea. We know it's not, After Dark. I've also seen That Shot of the isolated country house - what? - 200 times in the...

Interesting news coming out of the camp of the indie feature The Victim. It seems as if actor Michael Biehn has flexed his directing muscle as well on this latest thriller.
From the Press Release:
Michael Biehn is best known for his captivating roles on-screen, but you can now add a new title to his long list of credits. The lead actor of The Victim is now also helming the role of director in the much anticipated psychological thriller.
“Throughout my career Iʼve worked with some of the greatest directors of all time, like James Cameron, William Friedkin,” Michael says. “Iʼve gotten the chance to really watch the best at work...but Iʼve come to learn Iʼm a maniac on set. Iʼm so passionate I get really intense, and I think thatʼs how I get the best performance out of my cast.”

“If you want drugs, violence, suspense and lots of sexy people, this movie is for you,” says actress/producer Jennifer Blanc with a smile as she greets me on the set of The Victim – a new backwoods indie thriller that sports some heavy-duty subject matter and one helluva cast. Directed by Brock Morse, written by and starring genre icon Michael Biehn, the film boasts a gritty multi-character driven story of corrupt cops, strippers and backwoods folk – the kind where no one is innocent and nothing is black-and-white.
“This is Michael's, Brock's and my baby,” says Blanc, “I usually play lunatics and sidekicks, and now I actually get to be the heroine of the story. Danielle Harris and I play two best friends who are strippers in a bar who get into a really bad situation with a client and basically end up fighting for our lives.”

Recently filming in Los Angeles, Bloody Disgusting's Chris Eggertsen took a trip down to the set and witnessed a whole lotta screamin' Biehn! Aliens is one of my favorite films of all time, so needless to say I was pretty excited to meet Michael Biehn (aka Corporal Hicks) on the set of The Victim, his latest film co-starring real-life spouse Jennifer Blanc ("Kendra" on the short-lived Fox series Dark Angel), scream queen Danielle Harris.... Sometimes acting can get a bit out of hand, especially method acting, as you're about to see.
During a scene in which star Michael Biehn was set to struggle with a crooked cop, played by Ryan Honey, things went shall we say ... not as planned? According to Bloody Disgusting here's how it went down:
"According to Biehn, he insisted - against stunt coordinator Tony Snegoff's advice - that Honey not only use a genuine Lapd chokehold, but that he actually cut off his air supply in order to heighten the realism of the scene. Unfortunately, the actor didn't "tap out" soon enough - as you can see, confused cast and crew members wait several seconds before realizing he's actually blacked out from the pressure (note his twitching hands). Luckily, Biehn came out of the experience unscathed...though needless to say, they went with a different hold when doing re-takes.
