Not easy to follow on from "Revelations" but a very worthy effort
TheLittleSongbird15 February 2017
Season 2 was a mostly solid season for 'Criminal Minds'. Boasting great episodes such as "The Fisher King Part II", "Sex, Birth, Death", "North Mammon", "The Boogeyman", the "No Way Out" episodes, "Revelations" and "Profiler, Profiled", with almost all the episodes missing that very high standard still being strong. The only real odd-one out, meaning barely average, was "Honor Among Thieves".

It must not have been easy following on from one of the season's best episodes "Revelations". While it is not as good, being not as horrifying or as emotional, "Fear and Loathing" is a worthy following episode and is often very good. There is actually not much wrong with it. Like some fans, was expecting "Fear and Loathing" to explore the aftermath of Reid's ordeal and how he was coping but felt that while it was acknowledged that much more could have been done with it and that Reid was somewhat underused.

Visually, the production values are without complaint. It's very well shot and lit and is overall stylish, gritty, classy and atmospheric. The music is moody in the haunting and melancholic sense and fits well, without either enhancing or distracting from it. The direction keeps the momentum going but lets the case breathe, and most of the pacing is spot-on apart from the climax.

The script is thought-provoking, tautly paced and structured and nicely balanced. The story is absorbing. Not just the case which does a very good job with themes of political intrigue, racial tensions and the good and bad of releasing profiles to the media (which has disastrous unforeseen consequences), and with a fair share of tension and suspense (liked too that the profile was spot on early on but that the motives for the crimes weren't what was initially suspected).

Also the team interaction, especially the sensitively done and touching brother-like bond between Morgan and Reid. This caring side to Morgan is him at his most likable, which makes it frustrating that this side wasn't written more and that his character writing generally lacked consistency. The unsub is not the most interesting or menacing on 'Criminal Minds' but still poses a good threat. The acting is very good, Shemar Moore giving some of his better acting on the show and Mandy Patinkin and Matthew Gray Gubler always being excellent.

In conclusion, very good and worthy episode of 'Criminal Minds'. It holds up well on its own, though it might be a good idea due to them being referenced more than once throughout to be familiar with "The Big Game" and "Revelations" beforehand. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Truly excellent episode

Warning: Spoilers
Firstly, a negative. This has flashbacks and on-going plot devices carrying over from the previous 2 episodes. So watching it stand alone can be somewhat annoying.

That aside, this is a fantastic episode showing the outcomes of hate speech and rhetoric. Without spoiling the episode, there is an interesting outcome from abuse of media and politics; along with the normal hunt for a serial killer.

Perhaps the only downside to this episode is the actual hunt for the serial killer plays a bit paint by numbers. Overall though, one of the highlights from the second season of this great show.

Disclaimer:I am no expert reviewer, I just need a show to binge watch and I'm going to Write a review for every episode I watch.

I don't really have much to say about this episode except for it was alright. Like I thought the hunt for the murder was interesting but I think it would've been more interesting if it was About hate crimes and they could've use the Reverend in the investigation but he just ended up being an obstacle.

I also wish they would've followed up on Reid a little bit more rather than just a couple dark flash backs and a one minute long conversation with Morgan I didn't feel like it was handled particularly well.

I do have to get props because I really did like the ending when they rescue of the girl. I really like when you get to see the attributes assigned to an unsub in a profile play out in the episode. Like they knew that this person was gonna be a smooth talker and he was as he was, like being able to fool a cop into letting him go with the girl.

I thought the racial conversation between Morgan and detective ware was interesting but maybe training a little too hard to be impactful and I didn't really think the Detectives death was necessary and didn't think it was handled well. But that's really just personal preference.

It was just a pretty standard episode with a couple of good scenes thrown in.

Pronounce correctly, Please!
vacek_john14 February 2007
New London is named for London, England, and its river is also the Thames. But in Connecticut they pronounce it ''Thaymes.'' Attracted by a natural harbor where Long Island Sound meets the Atlantic, John Winthrop Jr. and a band of Puritans settled in 1646.

**** In 1705 Groton (rhymes with ''rotten'') became a separate community. It was named for the home town of the Winthrops.

The name of the community is mispronounced incorrectly a number of times. Closer research of the community that is being portrayed is needed for this show.

One bad....many other GOOD aspects for a truly fantastic show. Is this the fault of continuity, or of the writer(s). Someone should have caught it.

Fear And Loathing

As near as I can tell there is a 44.784% chance that Gideon will express himself emotionally.

A Gulfstream G550 costs around $3,600 an hour to operate.

Who's Sok Ratease?

I think Emily did it. She seems to know a lot about date-rape drugs.

Maybe Reid did it. He seems to know a lot about date-rape drugs.

It's time for the totally lame round robin briefing.

Who's Sis Arrow?

More heavy-handed than usual

Warning: Spoilers
If there were any doubt, when you see a black cop among the locals when our gang is in town to deal with African-American victims dying, you know he's just there to be killed. You know, for pathos. for irony.

Who's to blame for black girls getting killed? Them, apparently, when the investigators let someone say that no-one could fall for the fake business cards of the killer. Yup, that's on the girls, then. Who's to blame when the cops aren't finding the killer? The black preacher, talking to the news media. The writers had the nerve to put that nonsense in the mouth of the (soon to be dead) black cop, of course. The episode is shot through with this stuff. You might say that depth and subtlety are never strong points in CM plots, and you'd certainly be right, but you know, someone could read a script and point this stuff out to them.
