In O Say Can Bess See (2009), a reference to the monolith of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) can be made.
The character of Bessie Higgenbottom was based upon a childhood picture of co-creator Cynthia True as a brownie scout, and Cassie McMadison, an unhinged brownie scout Amy Poehler played in several episodes of her series Upright Citizens Brigade (1998). Bessie's likeness is based upon childhood pictures of Amy Poehler.
During an interview with TV Guide, when asked if Amy Poehler was trying to appeal adults with the show, she wrote: "Yeah. What I love about SpongeBob SquarePants (1999) is that it's very watchable for an adult. But kids like it because they don't feel like they're being pandered to. That was what we were looking to do with The Mighty B! [...] We wanted to do a show that had a strong female character who didn't have too many rainbows and unicorns." Poehler previously guest starred in Have You Seen This Snail? (2005) 3 years prior.
This is the first and only animated television series to be created by Amy Poehler as well as her first and only animated television series for children. She never got to create another animated show again until Duncanville (2020) 12 years later which became her first time creating an animated show for adults.
