- As Macross City goes up in arms at being denied disembarkment, Kyle Minmei makes a considerable impact both in the city and with Lisa Hayes.
- On the SDF-1's bridge, the crew is reacting to the Earth government's refusal to take the civilians as well as its order for the ship to leave Earth again. Sammie, Vanessa, and Kim ask Captain Gloval if there's anything else he can do, but he leaves, saying he has to figure out how to break the news to the survivors. He asks them to try to understand.
Meanwhile, Rick and Minmei take Kyle to the Chinese restaurant, where Kyle is reunited with his parents. A few doors down, the three Zentraedi spies Rico, Bron and Konda hungrily eye a food display in the window of a restaurant. Rico charges the display, breaking the glass, but when he tries to eat the food, the restaurant's owner comes out. She asks them if they can't tell the difference between real food and plastic, adding that if they're trying to eat that, they must be really hungry. She tells them to come inside, where she'll make them some real food.
At Minmei's uncle's restaurant, Lisa and the other girls arrive with Max. They find the place crowded, but Rick, who is sitting at an empty table, invites them to sit with him. Rick says that the place is crowded because Minmei's cousin Kyle, who ran away a long time ago, just returned, so everyone in the town is there to see him. When Lisa sees Kyle, she is immediately reminded of her late fiancé Karl. The other ladies are also smitten by him.
The Mayor greets Rick, and Kyle comes over to talk to the Mayor as well. The Mayor decides to leave the group alone to get acquainted. After he leaves, Sammie says that the Mayor was implying that Kyle doesn't like the military. Kyle says he doesn't like fighting of any kind - it only results in devastation and destruction. Rick says he didn't join because he liked devastation and destruction, and he believes he's also speaking for everyone else at the table. Kim, Sammie, and Vanessa nod in agreement.
Minmei says they're celebrating Kyle's return and suggests they turn on the TV show she taped yesterday. The broadcast is interrupted by a sudden news announcement that none of the survivors are allowed to leave the ship. Kim tells the group that if that's the best they came up with, the public isn't going to be happy. True to her words, the civilians in the restaurant come up to Rick's table, demanding answers. Rick says he doesn't know, while Lisa jumps in to defend him. Unwilling to back down, the crowd becomes more agitated. Lisa gets up to leave, but one of the civilians grabs her arm. Max stands up and tells the man to let go of Lisa, but he throws a punch at him, starting a brawl in the restaurant. Kyle is drawn into the fight and easily manages to subdue his attackers.
With the fight over, Max notes that Kyle is pretty well-trained for someone who doesn't like to fight. Lisa notices that Kyle is bleeding and offers him a handkerchief, but he declines. Minmei says Kyle doesn't really like servicemen and offers to help.
Meanwhile, aboard Commander Azonia's ship in the Zentraedi fleet, she is told that Khyron left against her orders. She is upset, but wonders what he's up to. On the SDF-1, one of the bridge officers detects Khyron's approaching alien vessel and notifies Gloval, who has the information forwarded to headquarters. Claudia notices Lisa in a bit of a daze and asks her if it's because of Kyle, but Lisa denies it.
Kim tells Gloval that headquarters has launched conventional warheads, though Gloval knows those will be useless against the alien ship. The SDF-1 launches its fighter squadrons to join the battle as well. Khyron launches a counterattack, which penetrates the SDF-1's first line of defenses. Gloval orders the Vermillion squadron on deck, and Lisa has them reposition to avoid enemy fire. With his team still in harm's way, Rick orders them to launch. Lisa closes her eyes and hopes that Rick will be all right.
As the battle continues, Claudia reports that a second enemy attack wave is on the way. This group, however, belongs to Azonia, who directs them to thwart Khyron's plan and not fire at the enemy. Azonia orders Khyron to break off his attack. Reluctantly, he complies, but tells one of his men not to forget their souvenir before they leave.
Getting the hint, Khyron's subordinate launches his ship into a direct line with the SDF-1. Gloval orders the crew to prepare the Daedalus for attack. Lisa relays the order. Rick checks on Ben and Max, then tells them to follow him as they engage Khyron's pods.
As the Zentraedi ship approaches, Claudia counts down to the Daedalus attack. When the timer reaches zero, Claudia orders the attack. Still in a daze, Lisa hesitates until Claudia calls out her name, snapping her out. She launches the attack as the enemy ship approaches. The Daedalus penetrates all the way through the enemy ship, and Lisa fires the emergency defense missiles.
Suddenly, Rick radios Lisa that he's in direct line of their missiles. His fighter is damaged, and he radios that he's hit. Meanwhile, the followup missile attack helps completely destroy the enemy vessel. Frustrated, Khyron wonders how his plan could have failed, while Azonia ribs him about how "slightly less than perfect" his plan was - if it had been any less perfect, he'd be dead too. Azonia orders the Zentraedi forces to retreat. Claudia asks if they should pursue, but Gloval says no - he doesn't want to push his luck or theirs. Gloval says he'll be in his quarters, but before he leaves, he commends Lisa on the job she did.
In her quarters, Lisa is shaken both by Kyle's words and Rick's distress call. She sobs, hoping and praying that Rick doesn't die. Meanwhile, a recovery aircraft finds Rick unconscious and bleeding after having bailed out of his plane. He is taken to the base hospital and into surgery.
