Brilliant first episode
movieman_kev19 June 2008
After speaking for quite some time among various phone conversations, Gavin and Stacey decide to finally meet in the flesh, each bringing the best mates, Smithy & Nessa respectively, along for their initial meeting.

The chemistry between Gavin & Stacy seems to be spot on. Despite Nessa & Smithy (Series Co-creators James Corden and Ruth Jones) providing the quasi-raunchy jokes (which frankly are hilarious in their own right), the series seems to have created a sweet, often humorous aura that I found quite intoxicating. Brilliant first episode. One that definitely won me over.

My Grade: A

Episode 1

Warning: Spoilers
Even in 2007/2008 a show about people talking on the phone who have never seen each other feels dated.

But that is sort of the charm about it. It is not the funniest show, the premise wasn't anything you haven't seen before, but the characters feel like those you want to learn more about.

Gavin & Stacey is highly overrated, but you could tell from episode one that it would be a special show.

Warning: Spoilers
A very strong first episode introducing all of the characters very well with a strong base for the show to build on in the future and a few good laughs.

Great little sitcom kicks off (spoilers)
chrimbow11 April 2008
The series begins with Gavin and Stacey chatting on the phone planning their first date in London after six months of telephone flirting. The prospective couple meet up and hit it off straight away. They are joined by their best friends Smithy and Nessa who engage in their own sexual relationship much to Smithy's own disbelief. Well written and very funny, the main characters develop swiftly, as does the plot. The program reminded me a little of "The Royle family" with comical insight into the British psyche. Nessa (played by co writer Ruth Jones) is one of my favourite characters , her matter of fact opinions and presence are gold, but as all are very funny in their own way it would be tricky to pick a stand out character. Just watch it, Highly recommended!

Not for me, despite the quality being clear

Like a lot of people I am discovering this show based on the stellar 2019 Christmas Special.

Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this episode half as much, and wouldn't rush to see any more.
