Not in Today's Army
Prismark1012 January 2022
There are aspects of this story that are still relevant today.

A lawyer's son thought being a trainee solicitor at his dad's firm was not for him. He joined the army and gone up to the rank of major.

Major Gardiner (Malcolm Tierney) likes the challenge of being in the army and strong discipline, a chain of command that needs to be obeyed.

This is at odds with the more relaxed and softly softly approach favoured by Lt Col Brant. He has no time for constant parades at the yard and sudden kit inspections.

When Gardiner falls out over the matter of discipline with Brant, Gardiner faces a court martial. David Main is asked to represent him, instead his father, a rival of the firm.

As the court martial takes place, there is a side plot of a soldier with long hair and a casual attitude to safety of himself and others during a shooting exercise.

There is an interesting debate here regarding what approach to take when training squaddies. Gardiner mentions the Troubles in Northern Ireland and the problems that could occur if soldiers did not follow orders.

I have relative who is an army veteran. He stated that after year 2000, the army was more like Brant's version. After all if you have fought in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. You are in no mood from a superior officer telling you what it would be like in a war zone. You have fought in plenty of wars.

Now some years after these wars, it is moving towards Gardiner's view.

I have to say David Main became an expert on military law rather quickly.
