Dana tells the story of how her parents met in an arcade. In the arcade, they show people playing video games. One of the games shows a recreation of a scene from the film Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) with Jigen sitting on top of Lupin's Fiat, while the enemy is tossing grenades at them. This game could be Cliff Hanger, which was a laserdisc game using scenes, including this one, from the Lupin film. When the camera pulls back to show who's playing, it is actually Lupin III himself! However, he is using a steering wheel controller, which was not used in the Cliff Hanger game.
This second season titled Robotech: The Masters is an adaptation of Super Dimensional Cavalry: Southern Cross (1984). That series spanned only 23 episodes, so this "clip show" was created flashbacking to scenes from the Macross Saga spotlighting Max and Miriya's whirlwind romance. This opening episode establishing Dana as Max and Miriya's daughter forged a link to the previous story arc and also expanded the season's episode count to 24.
