Too Much Tag Team Wrestling and Not A Great Show

Warning: Spoilers
Great American Bash 1992 Thoughts

The 1992 Great American Bash was the 4th annual Great American Bash event produced by WCW and 8th overall as the under the name banner. It took place July 12, 1992, at the Albany Civic Center in Albany, Georgia with attendence approximately at 8,000. PPV was originally supposed to be held in Philadelphia, but a union strike forced WCW to move it to Georgia a month before the event. WCW began their NWA Tag Team Title Tournament at the Clash of the Champions. The first round was contested on TV, as well as one Quarterfinals match. However, the remainder of the tournament would take place at The Great American Bash. Yep a night full of Tag Team Wrestling. We would also see Sting defending the World Title against Big Van Vader which would be one of the Greatest moments of Vader's career.

Some bad decisions for this event cause a lot for WCW. Bill Watts, the executive president, having a love for Old School (70s in this time period) as well as a team and some wrestlers being underuse despite how talented they are which will make the booker drop them even lower. Sounds like someone we know today in Wrestling? Also some pointless unification buildup for this but I won't get into that. Lastly the beginning of the Steiner Brothers wanting out.

The Good - The opener was pretty solid and I enjoyed the Rude/Austin vs. Rhodes/Windham match. The obvious best match of the night was Sting vs. Vader which was an Awesome world title changing night. Sting was working through some injuries so some hardwork credit for him. Vader also was one of the best workers of 1992.

The Meh - Well majority of the tag card was fine. Something I'll get to was the lacking chemistry between everyone on the card but 1 duo didn't have any. I also checked deep into the weeks buildup and Austin & Rude really were not in the right position. Basically the random pairings of many teams didn't look right despite them working well together.

The Bad - I think the worst thing about this show was the attempt to do everything the classic way through out this event. Matches going on 20 minutes and old school rules of top turnbuckle really killed the crowd. The main event was pretty much a wrap as the audience started leaving. Nothing against the Miracle Violence Connection but the chemistry didn't click with none of the teams and the decision to have them over the Steiners clearly was a bad idea. The tournament at the end being half of the card was also not very good.

Overall - Not a good show at all. 2 great matches but the rest of the card's killed the crowd and pacing. This would also be one of the lowest buyrates in WCW history (0.4). Bill Watts and Jim Ross were a bit too obnoxious with the booking. Only match worth looking back at is the World Title match.

Score - 5 out of 10: Mediocre

0 = Terrible : 1 = Bad/Lackluster : 2 = Decent : 3 = Good : 4 = Awesome : 5 = One of the Best of all Time :

1. Flyin Brian & Jushin Thunder Liger vs Nikita Kolaff & Ricky Steamboat - 3.5/5

2. The Fabulous Freebirds vs. Hiroshi Hase & Shinya Hashimoto - 2/5

3. Rick Rude & Stunning Steve Austin vs. Dustin Rhodes & Barry Windham - 3/5

4. Nikita Kolaff & Ricky Steamboat vs. Terry Gordy & Steve Williams - 2/5

5. Hiroshi Hase & Shinya Hashimoto vs. Dustin Rhodes & Barry Windham - 1.5/5

6. Big Van Vader vs. Sting: WCW World Heavyweight Championship - 4/5

7. Terry Gordy & Steve Williams vs. Dustin Rhodes & Barry Windham: NWA Tag Team Championship - 2/5

Best Match - Big Van Vader vs. Sting

Most Memorable Moment - Vader's title win.

2. Big Van Vader - Great Performance

3. Nikita Kolaff & Ricky Steamboat - Great Performance

4. Flyin Brian & Jushin Thunder Liger - Great Performance
