Bound-And-Gagged In 'Little Havana'
ccthemovieman-128 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
A "Little Havana" resident in Miami hears screams from next door. "They killed him! They killed him!" Police are called and find an elderly man bound-and-gagged with duct tape and very dead. This is a bizarre scene, as he's taped almost like a mummy. The victim is a 72-year-old who lived in the neighborhood for a long time. His house had barbed wire surrounding it. It looked like a fortress. Inside, the house was ransacked and the man's safe had blood on it. One of the detectives says, "everyone in Little Havana thinks all old Cuban guys have lots of money stashed away in their house, which is why these guys become prey." After investigation, it appears like a case of revenge. Several weeks earlier, the old man had caught someone snooping around and had bound that guy with duct tape. They figure the guy came back to return the favor, and then some.

Obviously, this was an extremely interesting case. Among the things we learn, as another detective points out, is that "those CSI shows always get instant results but it's not like that in real life. It takes time to analyze everything, often days." In addition, we get a little humor as two detectives argue over whether the old TV show "Miami Vice" was good or not.

Meanwhile, in Dallas, in this TV program's second crime case, police arrive in a northern section of town to find a woman lying in a lot of blood. A loaded gun is found underneath her body. It hadn't been fired, but it tells police this woman must have been expecting trouble.

Tips on the case lead detectives to a man named "Mississippi," but he looks innocent. Then they hear about another guy and then two more guys who definitely look guilty, but police can't pin anything on them, and have to let them go. Murder charges are dropped and the case is still unsolved.

"This appears to be a nice woman but someone who made a lot of bad choices, particularly with drugs," notes one cop. "It almost always comes down to drugs." Another detective comments, "If you want to be a homicide cop, don't expect to get a lot of sleep." It's often a frustrating job with long hours, as seen here.
