Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.
“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. As a solo producer, Unicorn Films. Lizzette Atkins has a remarkably diverse and prolific development slate.
Atkins is preparing projects for directors Sue Brooks, Matthew Saville and Ana Kokkinos plus a slate of low-budget horror movies. While they span a variety of genres, Atkins says there is a common thread: all are director-driven.
She founded Unicorn Films last year after nine years as a partner in Circe Films, whose credits include Jon Hewitt.s steamy thriller X, Lawrence Johnston.s Night and Eddie Martin.s Lionel, a feature documentary on Aboriginal boxer Lionel Rose.
Her latest production, Anna Broinowski.s Aim High in Creation! had its world premiere on Wednesday at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
The most advanced project on her slate is Brooks. Driving Back from Dubbo, the saga of a 15-year-old girl who runs away with her best friend to see her favourite band, prompting her parents...

Producer Lizzette Atkins justifies the theatrical nature of Aim High In Creation! on several levels: the scale and scope of the ideas; its experimental style; the broad interest in the closed society of North Korea; and director Anna Broinowski.s cinematic eye.
.And Anna has proven she can sustain a story for 90 minutes,. says Atkins, referring to the bold Forbidden Lie$..
If the various threads can be woven neatly together, this intriguing project could be a pearler. Cinematic propaganda is the key theme and the film follows Broinowski as she travels to North Korea to meet with that industry.s leading lights and examine former leader Kim Jong-il.s passion for cinema and the filmmaking manifesto he published. Back in Australia, applying the advice she got on a script she took with her, Broinowski makes a short about a community overcoming gas frackers . after all,...

An Australian feature documentary has found a Us theatrical release five years after being released in Australian cinemas.
Lawrence Johnston’s Night will be distributed through Moustrap Films as part of the distributor’s Film Festival Flix campaign.
Producer Lizzette Atkins told Mumbrella: “Mousetrap was looking for films that they could take to an audience as an event screening. Lawrence is going over and he’ll be doing a Q&A after the screenings. It’s a great way of rolling out a niche product to the audience.”
When released in 2008, the film – about nighttime – struggled to attract an audience. Atkins said: “It was modest – kind of disappointing. I’d say it opened across 12-16 screens. Dendy did an extraordinary job on publicity but it didn’t connect with audiences.”
The Us deal was struck by Odin’s Eye Entertainment’s Michael Favelle.
It will be released across 25 theatres in...

We’re back with the complete preview of Ufc on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz. This time on the Getting Lucky mixed martial arts podcast, I am joined by English Thom Burton of lovely Southampton as my guest co-host. I figured it was time I brought a Brit into the fold. Though all bets are off when we cover the Tuf: Smashes Finale next week.

Tim Means (18-3) joins me on the Getting Lucky with Rob podcast to talk about his upcoming fight on Ufc on Fox 5: Henderson vs. Diaz on December 8th in Seattle, Washington. He’s facing Abel Trujillo (9-4), who is making his promotional debut. In our candid and open conversation, Tim shares with us his storied background in New Mexico, learning to fight against bullies, taking a pro fight with a gun shot wound, his stint in prison, and much more.
Ufc on Fox 5 Overview: This fight for Tim Means was originally intended to be on the Ufc 151 card, but due to the cancellation of the headliner between Jon Jones and Dan Henderson and the subsequent loss of the entire pay per view card, the fight was moved to this card along with Daron Cruickshank vs. Henry Martinez and Denis Siver vs. Nam Pham, all on the undercard.

I’m a little early for this one. On Saturday, December 8th, we will see arguably the biggest card of 2012. Six of the best fighters in the world will square off to see who is the better man. Two legends in the sport will take on the best two up and comers to see if they still have something to give. A defending champion will face off against a young fighter finally living up to his potential. We will also see two of the most exciting finishers in the sport today face off for a spot in the Top Ten of their division. Any fight on the main card has the potential to be a Fight of the Night or Year contender. On December 8th, Ufc on Fox 5 will light up annihilate everything on T.V in terms of excitement.
I will post my predictions about the stacked prelims before the card airs.

Writer/director Kate Dennis and Dop John Brawley shot six shorts with six available light locations on six different cameras. Ross Mitchell, post-production manager at Deluxe helped them in this adventure. This is their story.
John Brawley: Kate and I were working together on the first series of Offspring. We had some night exteriors to shoot in the backstreets of Fitzroy, and we were both amazed at how bright the street lighting looked when shooting the Red Mx camera using fast prime lenses. Kate has a film in development and she was concerned about how to shoot on the streets of Paris using only existing or available light. In the context of a wider discussion I’d been having with her about the differences between both film and digital acquisition, I thought it would be really interesting to test them all.

Get in on the meme! Make your own re-purposed garbage designs with these three product ideas.
Want to get in on the repurposed-trash design act? Maybe you read a big story about Diy engineering, or maybe you just want a Ke$ha-inspired "garbage-can chic" furniture set for your living room. Either way, three new product-design ideas mean the kludge is not just for nerds anymore--hacking has gone mainstream. So print out a Repair Manifesto, grab the duct tape, and get to work.
1. Makedo connector system. We gave you a heads-up on the Australian company Makedo back in July, but their Lego-like building system is now on sale (and selling out fast--hurry and get yours). Makedo is a set of joints and fasteners you can stick into pretty much anything thin enough to poke a hole in--cardboard boxes are the obvious choice--and use to connect bits of trash together into sculptures and furniture.

I don't believe I have ever reported the nominees for the International Film Music Critics Association before, but in the spirit of covering more award season news than is probably necessary I figured, "What the hell?" The nominees listed below make up the fifth annual International Film Music Critics Association Awards for Excellence with Wall-e receiving the most nominations including Film Score of the Year, Best Score for an Animated Film, Best Film Composition (for "Define Dancing") and Composer of the Year for Thomas Newman. The other big nominee is Danny Elfman who received the most individual nominations this year with seven: Composer of the Year; Film Score of the Year and Best Documentary Score for Standard Operating Procedure; Best Drama Score for Milk; Best Action/Adventure Score and Best Individual Cue for Wanted ("Success Montage"); and Best Fantasy/Science Fiction Score for Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The International...
