Funny Man was a drama series about a music hall company in the late 1920s who travel the variety halls of Britain.

Alec Gibson (Jimmy Jewel) is the leader of the troupe who is facing dwindling audiences by competition from the cinemas. More and more music halls are turning into cinemas.

The first episode introduces the characters and also sees Gibson putting faith in a new comedy routine which could turn around his fortunes.

Funny Man was based on the experiences of Jimmy Jewel's father. The title is ironic as it comes across as a drama with hints of tragedy.

There was nothing here that grabbed me. I remember this show when it was first broadcast and at that time it was not aimed at me, I was just a kid.

It is a costume drama which like Gibson's act is not enticing enough.
