Strained Relation
Good news for the Alf and Ada. Jeff is coming over on a business trip to London. He will be flying in for Christmas, unfortunately Joyce is staying behind.
Alf is hoping to take Jeff out boozing with Osbert Rigby-Soames. He reckons Ada will give him a lot of leeway as he will be taking Jeff out.
Jeff arrives bearing a bottle of bourbon for Alf. He is now a successful playwright with hit plays on Broadway. Success has brought with it various ailments.
Jeff has quit drinking because he now has an ulcer called Chloe. Alf is disappointed and Ada calls a doctor who thinks that the various illnesses are all in Jeff's mind.
Maybe a glass of milk will soothe Jeff. Alf laces it with alcohol while Ada tells them all that it really was all in Jeff's mind.
It was good to see Jeff back and that he finally is a success. I do wonder how he quickly he managed to knock off those hit plays. While living in London, he could hardly get a word written.

Jeff's back, but sadly he doesn't bring any laughs.
Ada is ecstatic to receive a letter from Jeff, detailing that he's visiting for Christmas, unfortunately Joyce is staying behind. Ada and Alf are shocked to discover Jeff is now a teetotaler, and worse, a hypochondriac.
I was really pleased to see Jeff pop up for a episode, when series four began, the whole show felt like it had been rebooted, half the cast gone, and a new setting. This felt like a step back to the show's early years.
Why did Jeff travel without Joyce, it seems quite unlikely, and how on Earth has he become such a success, was he just showing off?
At times, series four has felt as though it's moving in the right direction, this felt like a couple of steps back, it just didn't quite work, the laughs were thin on the ground, well more non existent.
I just found Jeff a little bit irritating here, he doesn't really bring much to the table, only the scene where Ada offers her unique brand of psychiatry offered even the glimmer of a laugh, the rest was sadly just flat.
Doesn't work,
4/10.
