The One with the Proposal

This is a lovely episode of the show, well written and performed.

One of the best episodes of the 12 years (because yes, I include the 'Joey' years).

I can't describe the amount of emotions I'm feeling right now
marwan119 August 2023
What a great ending for a season.. What a poignant moment full of emotions.. What wonderful writing and unforgettable moments.. It's just so wonderful to see my second family from the first season as best friends and now they are getting married.. This is the best episode for me of the show so far. Everything was perfectly balanced in writing, and the sequence of events for this moment was emotionally touching mixed with great comedy and wonderful romance.. An episode that tells a lot. There is a lot in our world that does like Monica's decision in the beginning, and this is what spoils many relationships.. Simple things and details in the episode made it It would be a masterpiece for "friends" world.. I'm just very emotional right now.. Just 10/10.

Richard tells Monica that he still loves her
Lady_Targaryen9 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Richard tells Monica that he still loves her and that he wants to marry her and have kids, since he feels sorry until today of letting her go. This makes Monica stays in doubt about her relationship with Chandler and a little shacked, since Chandler never liked or thought about marriage. Chandler stays worried with all the situation and decides to propose Monica in their apartment, that is full of candles in a very romantic scenario.

Rachel is worried that she is the only one who doesn't have a ''back up'' in case she reaches 40 as a non-married woman. She discovers that both Joey and Ross are Phoebe's back ups, and of course she stays revolted about that and decides to talk to Phoebe.

Richard's Maturity and Chandler's Proposal
vivianla23 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Rachel and Phoebe talk about Mon's marriage and claiming to not be jealous. They wonder if they will ever find love. Rachel asks Ross to marry her if they are both not married at 40. Phoebe has taken both Ross and Joey as backups though.

Chandler pretends to not be interested in marriage and tells Monica that pigs don't marry. They have sex with hundreds of other pigs.

Richard asks Monica if Chandler would give everything to her like he would. He is very mature. Monica's wrist looks so pretty.

Chandler comes back to the apartment looking for Mon. Joey tells him Mon packed her bags and looks like she was going to her parents. Chandler opens the door and there are candles everywhere. Monica has tears in her eyes and expresses how grateful she is to have found love with her best friend.

They slow dance to beautiful music and the candles. The gang comes in for a group hug but Ross is missing. Rachel dismisses it saying he knows what this is all about he has done it 3 times.

An OK episode that is quite overrated
puzgolac6 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
To summarize my feelings about this episode in one sentence: it is an OK, though overrated episode, that is let down by the absolute cringe fest of an ending.

As another reviewer has said: this episode has a big event - Chandler and Monica's engagement - but a big event does not automatically mean a great episode. Sadly, it seems that a lot of people are unable to tell the two things apart.

There are a few laughs here, and Tom Selleck is absolutely brilliant. It is always great to have a guest star that is actually a great actor, not just a famous one (and this series has had a few misses in that department over the years). But that ending... Man, that cringe overload is uncomfortable to watch. And the audience screaming mindlessly just makes it so much worse. It is a typical Hollywood stupidity, this inexplicable need to reinvent the wheel with over the top proposals and wedding vows, as if anything normal would somehow mean that the love between the characters is inadequate. And so mediocre writers throw around pathetic, over the top, unbelievable plans and emotions and empty phrases that are supposed to wow the audience. Well, there is the famous quote from the Star Wars about what kind of people are strongly influenced by the Force that would fit well here.

Wasn't sure whether to rate 6 or 5
jpapanone15 August 2021
It's a big episode...but not a good one.

I think I laughed 2 maybe 3 times.

Just very mediocre. It ain't 9 or 10.

I think friends fans were just unable to be objective about the episode and just gave it a high rating bc it's the engagement.

As a fan of good friends episode, I'm able to not be taken by that plot point.

I dont ever have to see this episode ever again.

Unless...there are like 4 minutes in the full episode vs the tv rerun, that has all the laughs.
