The Christopher Guest-style mockumentary Marathon premieres on digital and On Demand this July. This trailer will have you in stitches!:
From writer-directors Keith Strausbaugh and Anthony Guidubaldi, Marathon is “a cheeky, giggle-filled mockmentary” (The Film Yap) that tracks an assemblage of improbable partakers of a long-distance race “Christopher Guest-style” (Projected Figures).
The mock-doc begins three months before Devil’s Canyon Marathon, an underfunded local race organized by shoe store owner, Ed Clap. We meet and follow the below runners, delving into their training, but more importantly, their personal relationships (or lack thereof) with friends, family, and romantic partners. Ryan O’Brien missed qualifying for last year’s Boston Marathon by nine seconds. He’s obsessed with everything Boston. This is his year. Or is it? A foot injury and a testy relationship with the cameraman may be his undoing. Jenna Kowalski is attempting to break the record for...

Netflix has a whole lot of spooks up its sleeve for the month of October.
From Adam Sandler’s “Hubie Halloween” (Oct. 7) to the “Hill House” follow-up “The Haunting of Bly Manor” (Oct. 9), the Halloween-themed goodness is in high supply next month. Watch Netflix’s little teaser reel above.
If you want a gory horror film, try “Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight” (Oct. 28). Other new creepy flicks include “His House” (Oct. 30) “Cadaver” (Oct. 22) and Spanish-language film “The Day of the Lord” (Oct. 30).
For a younger audience, there’s “Vampires vs. the Bronx” (Oct. 2) and “The Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting” (Oct. 15).
In terms of TV, get ready for Volume 2 of Netflix’s “Unsolved Mysteries” reboot series (Oct. 19), and also check out Season 1 of CBS’ “Evil” (Oct. 1) about a forensic psychologist who comes face to face with evidence that challenges her disbelief in supernatural phenomena.

A serious actor like Adam Driver may not seem like the perfect fit for “Saturday Night Live,” but each of his three hosting stints has shown the full range of his comedic abilities. He is nominated in Best Comedy Guest Actor for hosting the Jan. 25 episode of “SNL,” which marks his fourth bid overall, following three consecutive nominations, from 2013-15, for his supporting performance on HBO’s “Girls.”
In his episode, Driver shows up in the cold open as Jeffrey Epstein, delivers a monologue about just how serious he is (to great comedic effect), and reprises his role as his “Star Wars” character, Kylo Ren, going full “Undercover Boss” as Randy the intern. He blends in seamlessly with the repertory cast as a dad trying to figure out who clogged the toilet among his daughter’s friends, an exasperated host of a science program, a cheerleading coach, a Medieval Times...

Netflix is parting ways with another unscripted series.
The latest casualty is Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj, which has been given the pink slip after six volumes and 40 episodes.
“What a run,” Minhaj said on Twitter when he confirmed the cancellation.
“I got to work with the best writers, producers, researchers, and animators in the game. My two babies were born and grew up with the show," he added.
"[Thank you] to @Netflix and everyone who watched. Now it’s time to return these screens to Best Buy.”
While Netflix rarely releases viewer data, the Hasan Minjah vehicle was a buzzy series.
That's what makes the decision so surprising.
When you add in the fact that it has won Emmy and Peabody awards, it makes it all the more confusing.
The streamer has tried shows led by star names such as Chelsea Handler, Norm Macdonald, Joel McHale, and Michelle Wolf.
All of those shows have been canceled,...

Earlier this year “The Good Place” signed off the air to great fanfare, but how many Emmy voters watching? NBC’s cerebral comedy about life after death starred Ted Danson as a demon with a heart of gold and Kristen Bell as a human struggling to become a good person, with its last episode airing January 30. The uplifting show has been nominated for seven Emmys overall, including Best Comedy Series (2019), Best Comedy Actor for Danson and Best Comedy Guest Actress for Maya Rudolph, but has yet to win anything. Now one of Gold Derby’s 31 Emmy Experts thinks that will change for its final season.
Lynette Rice (Ent. Weekly) predicts “The Good Place” will take home a pair of Emmys for Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actor. This savvy prognosticator also forecasts a career-first nomination for Bell, but says the ultimate winner of Best Comedy Actress will be Merritt Wever (“Run”). Don’t forget,...

Last year the TV academy forced FX’s “American Horror Story” to submit in the drama categories for the first time, since the “Apocalypse” season contained continuing storylines and characters from both “Murder House” and “Coven.” Because of the switcheroo, “Ahs” scream queen Jessica Lange was able to nab an Emmy nomination in Best Drama Guest Actress — a category she wouldn’t have been eligible for had the show stayed as a limited series. (Lange lost to Cherry Jones for “The Handmaid’s Tale.”) At this year’s Emmys, the exact same thing could happen to Andrew Scott for his one-and-done role on Netflix’s “Black Mirror.”

While perusing the list of likely candidates for an Emmy nomination as Best Drama Guest Actress, you will likely see some of the most preeminent dramatic actresses on television today, names such as Cicely Tyson, Cherry Jones, Phylicia Rashad, Pamela Adlon… wait, what? Pamela Adlon? Yes, indeed. One of television’s sharpest and funniest comedic writer/performers may very well earn an Emmy nomination this year for her dramatic turn in “This Is Us.”
Though she has on occasion shown some flashes of drama as single mom Sam Fox on her FX comedy series “Better Things” (for which she may earn another nomination as Best Comedy Actress), nothing has quite prepared us for how deep she digs as Dr. Leigh, the new therapist for the troubled Randall (Sterling K. Brown) on the NBC series. Adlon has one of the more dramatic introductions of the season when all of what we...

“Praise be” to great guest stars! Amazingly, “The Handmaid’s Tale” has gone three-for-three at the Emmys in Best Drama Guest Actress, winning for Alexis Bledel (2017), Samira Wiley (2018) and Cherry Jones (2019). A fourth triumph would tie Hulu’s post-apocalyptic series with “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” which won a record four years in a row for Leslie Caron (2007), Cynthia Nixon (2008), Ellen Burstyn (2009) and Ann-Margret (2010), not counting its first category trophy for Amanda Plummer (2005). Can “Handmaid’s” keep up its wild winning streak this year with standout guest stars Julie Dretzin or Clea Duvall?
Dretzin plays Eleanor Lawrence, the unstable wife of Joseph (Bradley Whitford). She appeared in 6/13 episodes in Season 3, which means she just made the “less than 50%” cutoff required for guest star eligibility. The recognizable character actress has yet to be nominated for a major industry award, despite regularly working in Hollywood for three decades.

Few have leveraged an Emmy win like Lena Waithe, who won Best Comedy Writing for the “Master of None” coming-out episode inspired by her own experiences. She tells Gold Derby in an exclusive interview about her new show “Twenties,” which semi-autobiographically picks up a few years later, “Some people say awards don’t matter and for me, that one really did because I was in such an interesting space in my career. I was feeling very powerless.” She recalls about the 2017 ceremony, “There was a standing ovation just because I was the first black woman not only be nominated in that category, but obviously to win in that category, so it was a major moment where everybody — and a lot of them were white men — had no choice, but to stand up and take notice that I do know what I’m doing, I do have a unique voice, people...

Last year, Christina Applegate racked up a surprising Best Comedy Actress nomination at the Emmy Awards for the freshman season of Netflix’s “Dead to Me.” As it now competes at the upcoming ceremony for its sophomore outing (for which Netflix has yet to announce a release date), Applegate could be nominated alongside her co-star Linda Cardellini, who didn’t make the cut last year. As of this writing, Applegate sits in third place in our combined Emmy odds, while Cardellini is in striking distance in eighth place.
In the first season, Applegate’s Jen and Cardellini’s Judy meet at a grief support group following their husband and fiancé’s passing; Jen’s husband was killed by a hit-and-run driver while Judy’s fiancé died of a heart attack. But there’s a twist: Judy’s fiancé Steve (James Marsden) is very much alive, but left her after she experienced her fifth miscarriage,...
