The Blakes have new neighbours - a German couple named 'Willie' ( David King ) and 'Bertha' ( Claire Davenport. Predictably, Cyril is far from pleased, and makes constant references to World War 2 and the 1966 World Cup. The couple seem nice even though Willie takes delight in pointing out Germany's economy is presently in better shape than Britain's. What really upsets the Blakes' however is when the German couple poach their maid 'Maria'. Cyril and Dorothy now must look after themselves...
Anyone who recalls 'The Germans' of 'Fawlty Towers' will recognise the situation. Willie points out Cyril's resemblance to Hitler, and Cyril says it was his nickname back at the bus depot! David King appeared in the children's series 'Jackanory' in 1976. Rather than read a book, he opted to talk about his life and his acting career. He was an excellent speaker, but I cannot imagine many children would have been familiar with the plays and actors he was referring to constantly. Clare Davenport was a famiiar face from films and sitcoms of the period, usually cast as a domineering, unattractive woman. Her other credits include 'The Return Of The Pink Panther' and 'Revenge Of The Jedi'.
