Three's Company

The good news is that there were one or two bits where I did laugh.

Until Mike Reid comes in as brother Benny. This is desperate stuff. There is nothing funny with the conversation that Wally and Lily have about his work.

It only gets going when conniving Benny turns up to stay. He is homeless as his landlady has chucked him out.

Lily reluctantly allows him to stay the night. Benny has made himself at home, getting up after lunch, going through the Sporting Life. Bringing his girlfriend Molly round.

Just when Lily thinks that she has managed to get rid off Benny to the homeless shelter. The man from the council shows up telling them that the house is only suitable for a family.

Benny set it up so he can be part of the family and stay with them.

Benny might be a sponger but the show needed Mike Reid. Even though his persona did not stray too far from his stand up comedy.

The unwanted guest!

Warning: Spoilers
Benny has been kicked out of his digs by the landlady and cannot move in with his girlfriend Molly as she lives with her parents ( and they do not like Benny at all! ). Arriving at Wally and Lil's loaded with suitcases, Benny throws himself upon their mercy. Reluctantly, they allow him to stay for one night but he proves unwilling to leave. Lil tries to throw him out but a gentleman from the council turns up at the door to inform them that Wally and Lil may have to downsize to make housing available for larger families, forcing Lil to allow Benny to stay so they do not have to be rehoused.

Lil later decides that if they must have a relative staying with them, she wants her sister Beatrice to move in, in the face of opposition from Wally, who cannot stand the old bag!

Another funny episode setting the ball rolling for Benny heartless scrounging. True, no one in their right mind would put up with a bone-idle git like Benny but then this is a comedy. Besides, Benny didn't always get his own way. Quite a few times, Lil and even Wally to an extent managed to put his gas at a peep!

Pat Nye, who played Blakey's mum in the 'On The Buses' episode 'The Visit' appears as Lil's hatched faced sister Beatrice.

Funniest bit - Lil telling Wally that Benny has been making advances against her. Wally refuses to believe this as Benny is going out with the more attractive Molly. ''What would he want with mutton stew when he's got a tasty lamb chop?'' he cruelly asks Lil. Lil is hurt. Wally then tells her he was only joking: ''I like mutton stew. With my teeth that's all I can manage!''
