Dramatic and powerful drama.

Sam is on the hunt fo a deranged, sadistic and twisted killer, she sticks to her guns, and refuses to give in. Burton truly made an impact immediately, she needed no time to settle. I like that they gave her a back story, a troubled family, but the balance was right, it never felt like soap land. Silent Witness became more visibly graphic as the years went on, but the content of this one was certainly brutal. The ending is certainly gripping.

This first story is very rewarding to watch, no wonder the show is still going strongly. 9/10

More Barriers

Sam continues her investigation although there are roadblocks. The second half involves another woman, in prison for murdering her child, who is taking the rap for the same guy who is with the current woman. There are two young boys who are affected by the boyfriend who live in terror of him. This woman also feels that this guy loved her and is unwilling to testify. Meanwhile, there is an exhumation of the first girl's body. The conclusion is quite intense.

Highly Contrived

The first episode threw in a lot of unnecessary detail about family relationships that in the final analysis had nothing to do with solving the crime.

The psychopathic suspect is seen roving all over the place: the doctor's home, the school, his girlfriend's home. It's just unbelievable. Where were the police during all that time? The man's a suspected predator and no one is tailing him?

In the climax, the doctor realizes she needs to go back to the house. Does she turn her car around and drive back to the house? NO. She gets out of her car and RUNS back to the house. RIDICULOUS. But the writers needed enough time to pass for the psychopath to be fatally stabbed.

In the end, the only person who did what was necessary was A BOY. I. E., all of the adults in this two part story were completely incompetent and basically meaningless.

I disagree with one of the reviewers. There is nothing "powerful" about a bunch of impotent wimps allowing a rabid idiot to terrorize their community.
