Barrymore and stunning Allen entertain on Saturday Night Live
tavm10 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
In the cold opening of the February 3, 2007 edition of SNL, we're at the American Idol auditions with Ryan Seacrest (Seth Meyers) officiating at the judges' reactions to various animals like turtles, two cats, and a dog. ("Not getting you, dog." says Keenan Thompson as Randy Jackson with Amy Poehler as Paula Abdul and Jason Sudeikis as Simon Cowell) Seth says, "Live From New York, It's Saturday Night!" Drew comes on stage and mentions being a member of the Five Timers Club as she takes us through the studio where she falls for Andy Samberg who is later seen kissing Kristen Wiig. Will Forte becomes the rebound guy before Drew comes back on stage, takes a Q & A from Fred Armisen, then Andy reappears with a boom box a-la Say Anything... Drew and Andy embrace as Will kisses the one next to him. No, not Kristen but Keenan! First sketch is The Dakota Fanning Show where Poehler as Fanning discusses subjects normally over 12-year-old heads that confuses bandleader Keenan and guests Daniel Radcliffe (Bill Hader) and Abrigail Breslin (Barrymore). Sketch ends with Breslin and Fanning discussing upcoming movies. "In the next one I get raped!" says Dakota excitedly. Wiig next plays a marriage counselor who tries to cure Drew's habit of poisoning Will whose face has various splotches on it. Next, Ms. Barrymore is an excited interviewee drinking something caffeinated as she keeps coming to Keenan, Amy, and Maya Rudolph to explain her weird behavior. I especially liked her calling Thompson "Grown up Webster". Next, we're back at Target where Kristen teaches Drew how NOT to be a good cashier. On SNL Digital Short, Drew, Amy, Maya, and Kristen spoof '80s workout videos. Stunning musical guest Lilly Allen then sings, "Smile". On Weekend Update, Amy mentions presidential candidate Barack Obama mentioning a timetable for when soldiers can leave Iraq. "Of course, if you don't know enough about foreign policy, you can still be elected for two terms." Keenan appears as a mother to counterpoint the ruling that children should not be spanked as he threatens Seth when Seth interrupts. Then we're at Donnatella Versace's (Rudolph) Super Bowl half time party with Prince (Armisen) who suddenly leaves just as he's asked why he isn't at the stadium, Posh Spice (Barrymore), who seems to not eat anything, and David Beckham (Meyers) whose English accent is funny (not the "ha-ha" kind), and Elton John (welcome back, Horatio Sanz!) who makes double-entendre's with Donatella as they both face the camera afterwards. The host then plays a recently divorced society woman who's captured a male servant's (Amy!) heart. Next, it's grown-up Charlie (Drew, of course) from Firestarter who's now plugging sausages with her singing husband (Sudeikis). As evidenced by the husband's hook hand, Charlie still has trouble controlling her fire-making mind! Allen next sings, "LDN". Finally, Peter O'Toole (Hader) reminiscences with Drew about the "good old days" of getting drunk. During the goodnights, Drew thanks Lorne and co-producer Marci Klein for the Five Timer Card. One of the better shows from this season. The only really weak sketch for me was the marriage counselor one. With this show, the only other woman who hosted SNL five times was Candice Bergen. Hope Drew makes it six!
