Disappointing!
Expecting the well-known British charm of Hugh Grant, what I saw was a another glorification of modern pop music celebrity, "has beens" or not. He did look "older"--alarmingly so! Hugh Grant's films-- and, granted I have not seen them all, to my horror--bring a quiet, discerning wit into this mad world of load popular culture and Hollywood cult. What I like about his performances is his ability to project a personality that reflects a greater depth than that projected in the usual Hollywood glitter and mass culture. Why would he wish to even try to imitate that falseness? I am older than many fans. Yet I do appreciate the culture of a time of enrichment and edification that Hugh Grant delivers in the other films I have seen. This "other" culture of refinement does exist in many places and it should be applauded and promoted by such stars as Hugh Grant. There is a large and growing place for discerning films/DVD's in today's genre and there is a large educated population that disclaims the current emphasis on pop culture promoted by the media, especially in the so-called "inner cities" of America. This one was a big disappointment to me. It's onset seemed to drag on and on and was somewhat predictable. A more discerning script please, Hugh, next time. Stick to what you do best!
That said, it was good to see Brad Garrett in this film. Good performance,Brad.! I'd like to see more of them.
