During the last half of the 1800s, at least four counties there had towns named Deadwood. Founded by prospectors following the gold strikes, they lasted until the gold ran out. They're all ghost towns today, the last of which was abandoned in 1915 when the Post Office Department closed its office there.
This story took place before Deadwood, South Dakota was founded in 1876 - illegally, no less, on Indian lands in the Black Hills.
