"Feeling like I do, cause I'm dreaming of you." Lionel Richie and Diana Ross

This is another of my favorite episode/arcs of the show, this is part one of the Naru Nephrite arc. It's an interesting arc for the show and one of those rare ones because it's on a supporting character and antagonist or would be protagonist, both of them are the real main characters of the story arc, while the Sailor Senchi are second string. I like stories like that as it shows how big the world of Sailor Moon truly is and Usagi and her fellow Senchi aren't the only characters with lives.

The story is sort of like a Noir tale as there are these layers of suspense. With Nephrite it's interesting because you see he could go either way. There are some hints there is an internal conflect in him, that he's actually feeling more of Naru, that he's beginning to look at her as more than just a pawn. It even shows in his interaction toward her that doesn't feel like he's putting on a show but is genuine as there is real warmth in some of what he says and how he looks at her.

Naru like in the noirs is that innocent soul aware she's mixed up in dangerous business but is doing everything she can to help the one she loves. Sidenote, she looks good in that swimsuit we see her in. Ahem, not that I cleared the air, we get down to business, we really feel for Naru as her love for Nephrite is genuine, we even see daydream of the guy. It's suspenseful because were afraid the Nephrite will betray and hurt her in some way. However what makes this suspense really work is on it's double layer, where there is another possibility that exists but we don't think about it because we too focused on what we obviously know, we didn't consider what we don't know and that every person is three dimensional.

The highlights are in two surprises that we see from seeing Neferite saving Naru's life, just seeing that I can't help but think making these Shintsou reformed and supporting characters in the show was possible.

But the best one is seeing Naru's action which to me is one of my favorite moments of the show of all time. Just as Sailor Moon is about to finish Neferite off with her tiara, we see Naru jump right in front to shield him. I'll admit it was jaw dropping and for that I give Naru the gold "You got guts award". It was just beautiful because it showcased the true strength of her character, despite now magical ability like the rest she wasn't powerless. One thing in the animation I liked was we saw this blue aura that was surrounding her, which made me wonder if it was hinting she was another Sailor Senchi waiting to be discovered, Sailor Earth? I don't know but what important was that from what she does along with Neferite for her in return, shows part of what love really is about, the willingness to act on what you feel and risk everything for the one you love.

Naru didn't need magic because her true power was love.

Rating: 4 stars.
