Excellent masterclass in acting!

Edward Woodward delivers a mesmerizing performance as Philip Warne, a self-absorbed, bone idle dreamer.

Even after over 40 years, this 1975 teleplay is still riveting viewing. The surrounding characters - led by Rosemary Leach - also deliver, but this is all about Woodward's Philip Warne... his mean, selfish and manipulative passive aggression and the casual ease at which he makes everyone around him feel guilty about his failures and lack of achievements.

This fascinating character study puts most modern TV dramas to shame and it's a welcome breath of fresh air to see the actors in this feature take full control of the production. No silly music, no wobbly cameras, no bad language and no ludicrous sex scenes... just pure acting!
