One type of documentary I generally dislike is when the story is supposed to be about one individual but the film ALSO spends lots of time talking about someone else who is obsessed with the subject. Films like "Julie and Julia" come to mind...a film where I loved the content about Julia Child but I hated the portions about some modern woman, Julie, and her love of Julia Child. It's like this with "If You Knew Sousa", as the film is supposed to be all about John Philip Sousa but too much of this "American Experience" film is about a guy who is obsessed with Sousa and apparently was researching for a book about Sousa. But I didn't care about the modern guy...I just wanted to learn more about Sousa. So, for me, this is a huge strike against this documentary...it just focussed too much on a man and his obsession...not Sousa himself. As a result, despite being a longer than usual episode, it left much about Sousa unsaid. Still, despite this problem it is worth seeing...but it missed the mark at being a really good documentary.
