I watched this late one night many years ago when I lived in the UK. The scene of the play was set in a bedroom where an old lady (Mother) was in bed slowly dying. It is made clear that nothing can be done for her and it is only a matter of time.
The dialogue that takes place is between the two sisters played superbly by Frances de la Tour and Gwen Taylor. They bicker over what their Mother mean't to them. F de la T's character is very dark and blames her Mother for the fact she was single her whole life and the fact her Mother controlled her existence. GT's character, having got married and had her own life had rather fonder memories.
When close to death the mother has an accident prompting F de la T to announce 'She's sh*t herself again, she did it on purpose.' That more than anything summed up her attitude.
The reaction of both when she dies is quite different, well worth watching for the brilliant acting but as said, rather depressing.
