This starts off hilariously. Olive is seen going through her closet, looking at dresses. She picks out an outfit, goes behind a ----- and comes out in baggy sweatshirt, big glasses, baggy pants, a beret and wild hair. Popeye rings the doorbell and Olive greets him with her beatnik, "Enter my pad. Give me the hug, big-brain." Popeye freaks out. "Olive, are ya alls right? I better calls a doctor. Has ya had it long?"
In a second Bluto arrives. He has the same beatnik look!
"Crazy!, says Olive."Oooh," says the typically-fickle dame. Bluto turns to Popeye, shows him his new glasses, calls the sailor man "Daddy-o," and then tells Olive, "Like I did you the most, baby!" Olive replies, "You're the coolest, daddy-o."
Bluto and Olive continue this "hip" talk with all the phrases of the day, which are very funny. Sadly, I am old enough to remember all these. Finally, Bluto punches Popeye in the nose and tells him, "Like, go!"
Popeye gets run over on the way out and vows, "I''ll break up that combo if it's the last thing I does.
Later, we see the "Beat" coffee house and Popeye's attempts to get his girl back. Pluto is reading poetry ("Ode To An Onion.") This was a very funny, almost nostalgic cartoon and great take on the beatnik period of the late '50s and early '60s. There was nice artwork in here, too, as the coffee house looked very cool.
The last line of the cartoon is the one I used in the subject head,
