This remake of a 1956 feature film . . .

. . . practices many economies of scale. Whereas GIANT is bloated with 17 major roles, OIL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL efficiently combines most of these into a trio of composite characters, greatly reducing this oil story's running time and production costs. Mr. Beck embodies not only the Dean role, but those of Hopper, Fix and Rod Taylor, as well. Mercer not only plays the protagonist formerly hogged by Hudson, but also the gentlemen once portrayed by Chill Wills and Sal M-i-n-e-o. This leaves Mae recapping Liz Taylor, and voicing the parts once belonging to Mercedes, Carroll, Fran, Elsa, Judith and Carolyn, too. Naturally, a few of the personages crammed into the live feature to pad out its nearly four-hour running time are mercifully trimmed entirely in order to tell this tale in less than six minutes. That's surely enough time, when a story is set in the low-rated single star state.
