Somehow I never get burn out when it comes to 'The Man with a Past' genre.
Fella_shibby30 January 2022
I enjoyed this movie inspite of the first 50 mins being a bit slow but ther is solid character development n top notch performance.

The movie has a very dark, grimy n surrealistic feeling.

Brody looked believable as a man seeking redemption.

Havin njoyed the director's earlier movie Bullet Head, i was looking forward to this.

The last 40 mins is filled with brutal action scenes.

While watching the movie, i kept looking at my Pipe Wrench/Stillson Wrench which I use for tightening dumbbells' nuts.

Fans of Merantau, Leon : The Professional, The Man from Nowhere, The Equalizer, John Wick, Nobody, Man on Fire, A Bittersweet Life, No Tears for the Dead, Statham's Safe, etc will definitely enjoy this.

Good atmosphere but generic story
brentn28 January 2022
Adrien Brody and Glenn Fleshler are both great actors and this movie is no exception but aside from the acting the story was very simple and almost boring, it's no wonder they shelved the movie for over a year. I was not invested in any of the characters and the "brooding" narration that Brody does throughout the film is supposed to resonate with the audience but honestly it does nothing. The final showdown was cheap and by that I mean it looked and felt underwelming and under financed. The movie overall just felt so cookie cutter that by the end I was almost glad it was over since the build outweighed the conclusion. The only selling points were the location, the atmosphere and the aformentioned acting. Sorry but there is no need to rewatch this. Had potential but just disappointing.

5/10.

Don't understand the mindset of some
namstonk16 February 2022
Yes it's not a new story, man wanting quiet life after being a killer, thusly returning to his graphic nature. However it is slow for a reason, it's Brody he's a proper actor, not an all action hero, he wants to convey reason and not just show up basically having a tantrum over some injustice. The middle section is padded as are all these type of films, what do the critics expect? All out reflection or all out war? It's a better than most big budget movies and kills an easy hour and thirty, with not having to ponder over where the movie will go.

You watched it before

Nothing new: repentant assassin lives a simple life and gets affectioned to a young girl in a poor neighborhood. When she faces danger, he appeals to his skills.

It could've been better if was shorter. It has a slow rythm until the action begins.

Brody is fine. I don't mind the clichè story.

Grim And Reaperish

A really entertaining movie.

AB is simply impressive in the titular role and carries some proper brooding throughout the movie.

The movie strips all the wow factor from the action/violence, making its use much more effective and captivating.

Top fun :)

Style over substance
legionofthesnowzombie29 January 2022
The storyline is not new, but tried and true. It could've been a good movie, maybe even a great one. The actors do their jobs, and the cinematography is sufficiently bleak. The ingredients for a good redemption story are all there, so what happened?

It's the small things that add up. The viewer is pulled out of the story with WFT moments. It's the number of these moments that spoil the film. Style over substance is never going to work, it's distracting. The constant exposition of why Clean feels dirty is excessive, we understand his motivation. You don't need to hit us over the head with a monkey wrench, we get it.

It's a misfire, style over substance.

Not a bad movie. Not great either. Generic storyline, basic plot. Good acting, pacing and music make it enjoyable. I wouldn't go in expecting too much. It's a 6/10. Would have been a 5 without the music. The girl actor is good too.

Wasted potential

Once again here lays a movie that is well dressed but wrongly nurtured in its developing. Brody is an efficient actor and the story seems promising, but finally is a very forgettable affair. Such a shame.

tools of the trade
ferguson-627 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Greetings again from the darkness. "The trash man wasn't always a trash man." Writer-director Paul Solet re-teams with his BULLET HEAD (2017) star, Oscar winner Adrien Brody, who not only has the lead, but also co-wrote the script, produced the film, and gets a "Music by" credit. Following in the cinematic footsteps of John Wick or most any recent Liam Neeson character, this trash man is the lone beacon of hope possessing a particular set of skills that he uses to escape peril, save the innocents, and generally rid the world of bad guys. He's the avenging angel of Utica.

On the job, Brody's character is referred to as "Clean", and he's so mechanically inclined that he often salvages items from his route, repairs them with parts he gathers from the junk yard where he feeds the guard dog, and then sells the refurbished goods at the pawn shop run by RZA. When he's not working the garbage truck, Clean whitewashes the graffiti from the ramshackle homes in his hood, and brings homecooked meals to Dianda (Chandler DuPont), a local girl who lives with her grandmother. Now you might wonder how one man can accomplish so much, and the answer is that he barely sleeps. He's haunted by demons of his own past via nightmares and flashbacks. It's through these that we learn Dianda reminds him of the daughter he lost, and his past is one filled with violent images.

Clean attends group therapy sessions and has support from a "sponsor" played by Mykelti Williamson. Of course, as we've come to expect from this genre, past violence and efforts to redeem himself, won't insulate him from modern day violence. In an early voice-over, a tormented Clean offers up a TAXI DRIVER-loner-style philosophy as he discusses the sad state of the streets, and a "sea of filth". One particular good deed involving Dianda, places Clean in the deep end of that sea he finds so disgusting. It's also a sea he masterfully maneuvers.

That good (and violent deed) finds Clean crossing paths with local drug kingpin Michael (a menacing Glenn Fleshler), who runs his operation through the fish market he inherited from his grandfather. Michael's wannabe-gangster son Mikey (Richie Merritt, WHITE BOY RICK) doesn't appreciate his dad's "smell of success" and is the reason Clean and Michael square off. This also causes the big reveal in regards to Clean's past life, and explains his proficient use of a screwdriver and pipe wrench.

For those familiar with this genre and its use of violence, you'll notice many of the familiar and expected components. It's really Mr. Brody's expertise as a master mumbler, and his character's (initially) low-key approach to improving the neighborhood, that provide the touch of difference making this watchable.

Opens on January 28, 2022.

Don't bother
kzvkzy4 February 2022
We watched it so you don't have to.

Agree with other reviewers , the first half is decent enough. Has a bit of story & acting good, but the second has the script /action scenes of a BMovie & you can foresee the events in every detail very easily.

Do something else with your time.

A big red flare in the guts of the dugeon of silver screen hall . A reel feel good old days mixture of 70's,80's and 1990' revenge vigiliante action. Its a bit slow on the build up, but the two lines under the final answer is given to you ever so relentless it is. I had my doupts observing brodys name recurring at least 5 times in the intro cast/crew screenflashing, but he doesnt disappoint

there will be blood, gore and unwitty short dialouges, but if you can take that then the grumpy old man recommends.

A bit slow paced in the beginning but still an entertaining movie
deloudelouvain8 March 2022
I wouldn't pay too much attention to the extremely negative reviews for this movie, nor the extremely positive. Clean isn't that bad, nor is it an Oscar winning movie. It is entertaining though, and that's what it's all about for me. The story is well told, even though I think the flashbacks the main character has could have been done better. It's rather slow paced in the first half but towards the end it's all getting more interesting with some good action scenes. Adrien Brody is always convincing when he's playing his characters and in Clean he did a good job again. This role fitted him well. The rest of the cast was also convincing so I really don't get what people disliked about it. It's not a movie for everyone, you just need to like that kind of stories, crime/dramas turning into violence, and that's fine by me.

On the poor end of mediocre
andrew-hill5151 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So, from the opening credits it seems to have been (co)written and produced and stars Adrian Brody, who is not great at any of those jobs.

For some reason at some point in his career Brody thought he had the chops to be an action star, but he doesn't know how to pull it off, and is never convincing as one.

For example him being a mercenary badass in Predators was the worst thing in that movie, including Topher Grace, and he has not improved in that field in the last... I want to say 15 years? He continues that streak in this movie. Maybe he should stick to dramas.

Besides Brady's being less than convincing as having a history of violence and being total badass, the writing is so poor that the opening narration left me bored and aware that this was going to be dull, badly written, and the characterisation would be weak.

This continued through the whole first act, which is meant to build tension, until you find out that his terrible loss is that he was a junkie and probably some kind of criminal (though that is in no way shown and is only vaguely hinted at if you read between the lines) and left his fix kit in a drawer, and like a 6ish year old girl digs it out, loads a dose, cooks it, loads a syringe, mainlines it and overdoses. That is the backstory and it is stupid, dull, and the in no way helped the plot.

If she had been killed/hit and run and his nightmares and memories of violence was a revenge thing, that would have actually made sense and continued some kind of relevance and character development, both of which this film entirely lacks.

TLDR: It's a bog-standard one-man against a drug kingpin and protecting a girl in the process type deal, but it it the dullest one I've seen, and we've all seen a million of them. There are way better ones, watch one of them instead.

You sent me to kill the Grim Reaper
nogodnomasters3 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Clean (Adrien Brody) drives a garbage truck and is attempting to make amends for his previous "dirty" life. He is a handy man of sorts and is protective of a young girl who reminded him of one that he lost. When the local boys try to have some fun with her, Brody reverts to his old Liam Neeson mode.

Yes, this is another vigilante film of an unlikely hero. Better than the last half dozen with Bruce Willis.

Guide: F-word. Attempted rape. No nudity.

Similar but different to ... NOBODY (2021)
A_Different_Drummer2 February 2022
... To the recent cult hit NOBODY. Which itself was a riff on the idea that sometimes it pays to look twice at people we take for granted and assume are harmless. The major difference between the two films is that NOBODY really wanted to be a crowd-pleaser and pretty much succeeded, even if the story got nuttier at every turn. CLEAN on the other hand seems to want to please nobody (bad pun!) but itself, showcasing brilliant direction and editing for the sole purpose of building to a climax so late in arriving that, even when the film finally explodes, the audience is out of patience and feeling betrayed. Worth a Watch.
tashaspencer-043962 November 2022
This is your typical guy trying to erase his past because he screwed up with his life kind of thing. He was once violent but tried to change, ex-druggie, bad dad, and that whole nine. The movie is kind of slowly paced while they try to get you attached to the character while never fully revealing their past until close to the end. The movie itself is more on the drama side than the action side and was unfortunately almost boring in some spots. I also have to mention a few plot points kind of don't fully hang together story-wise. The second half of the movie picks up the pace some but never quite hits that high potential. However, the last 20 minutes of the movie are actually pretty spectacular. I also give the protagonist style points for unconventional choice of weapon and unique kills, as well as being realistically portrayed. By this I mean the character wasn't some super human with highly choreographed fighting moves and unnatural speed. His character was simply extraordinarily brutal and that made him more believable than most action movie protagonists. Overall, I will say this may not be up everyone's alley, but I am not sorry that I watched it. Not too bad.

Very generic crime movie...
paul_haakonsen4 April 2022
I must admit that I was actually looking forward to getting to watch the 2021 action crime drama "Clean" from writers Paul Solet and Adrien Brody. Why? Well, because the movie starred Adrien Brody, and he is usually always good in movies.

However, I have to admit that "Clean" was somewhat of a mediocre movie. The storyline, while it was indeed adequate enough, just hadn't enough leverage or punch to make it stand out among countless other action crime movies. So yeah, "Clean" was somewhat of a mediocre movie experience. Watchable, for sure, but a rather monotonous and bland movie actually.

First of all, the majority of the music in the movie was just not interesting at all, and actually was somewhat of a deterring factor for me, as I just absolutely loathe that particular genre of music.

The characters in the movie were lacking depths. They simply came off as being way too superficial, and the audience never really get to delve into the movie and the characters as needed, because the layering of the narrative was lacking majorly.

The acting performances in "Clean" were okay, taking into consideration that the script wasn't particularly thrilling or entertaining. And truth be told, then "Clean" is far from being up to the usual performance that you would get from Adrien Brody.

"Clean" is good enough for a single viewing, but that is essentially also all it has to offer. It is a very forgettable movie actually, and I doubt that come next week then I will still be recalling this movie.

My rating of "Clean" lands on a very bland five out of ten stars.

Expected more based on the trailer
S-t-a-t-i-x6 February 2022
I was rather excited to watch this movie after I saw the trailer. I do enjoy movies where the main character has a past he's trying to hide. Unlike John Wick and Nobody, however, and despite a similar runtime, Clean doesn't manage to grab me.

Although the cinematography is good and sets the atmosphere nicely, it fails whenever we see the flashbacks. This style of slowly revealing the past of the main character borders on annoying and breaks immersion.

The story had potential, but during the third act it speeds up immensely and falls apart. The build up was better than the climax, therefore I enjoyed the first half of the movie more than the second half.

Stick with it
ropelawshiel25 February 2022
A slow burn revenge drama well-acted if a little dark cinematography. Not sure about its audience as it is not a Liam Neeson/John Wick, Nobody style of film. The realistic acting is slightly miss calculated with the overboard violence. One man in the real world could not do this; the film's serious approach is a little at odds with the bloody action. I was a little uncertain at the start but enjoyed it.

This was not worth the data it streamed in on.

Seems to be on an endless loop for the first half and then it becomes a predictable mess in the second.

I wish I didn't bother.

American (A+ Movie) My Ratings 9 /10
THE-BEACON-OF-MOVIES-RAFA30 January 2022
NOT FOR EVERYONE.

I LOVED IT BUT FOR YOU ITS YOUR CALL

"Clean" doesn't aim high, it aims low, but it hits its target square-on, and its murky depictions of gut-churning violence don't wash away easily.

Hard-edged, old-fashioned, and anchored by a sturdy movie star performance from Adrien Brody, Clean plays well as a socially-tinged vigilante thriller.

Gritty 70s esk
branaginslaw11 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Not like John wick or nobody. More like an old school action movie from the 70s /80s. Brody is good as ever. Love the soundtrack, felt like rocky in the prepping me weapons for the big finale montage. The villian is the best part of the whole show. This actor was terrifying in True Detective and he's great here. His poor wife doesn't even get one line. Better than the score.jts got.

When the dirt just doesn't come off!
wjosephjorob1 February 2022
This is another action themed movie, but I like the character that Adrien Brody portrays in this film, he's a mess mentally and spiritually, who continuously tries hard to redeem himself in spite of his environment. No matter how hard he tries to cleanse himself of his previous life, he finds out that it is next to impossible, it's a slow-moving train script that hinders the production a little bit, the secondary characters support the story very well, but there are bits of material could have been cut out and rearranged in my opinion, that would have made it better, this is a hip hop version of Taxi Driver with more extreme violence with a contemporary soundtrack, either way I found it watchable, because of Brody, he's like a chameleon, he surprises you with his roles and now he flexes a little in the action category, not bad.
