Mary Alice Voice-Over: We see a sign in Mike's rehab reading "A man is only as sick as his secrets" and MA tells us it's there to remind patients to be honest about the past. But Orson didn't notice it, he was too busy thinking of his past or at least the part he shared with Mike Delfino. We flashback to the night Orson and Mike met, when Orson's mother had murdered his mistress in the kitchen Mike had come to fix the pipes in. Then we flash back to Mike in Orson's dental chair starting to recognize him. Then a flashback of Orson's mother worrying that Mike would remember too much and her demand to stop that from happening. (I don't think we actually saw this and we only see the woman from the back, not an actual shot of Dixie Carter.) Then we see Orson mowing Mike down with his car. Orson is now at Mike's door at the rehab center since Mike asked him to visit. Orson was worried that Mike remembered. Mike asks him into the room. Orson natters about the tennis court. Mike tells him to sit and tells him that things are becoming clearer. Orson says "good for you." Mike says not really "when you hurt people you've got to be accountable." Then he asks for Orson's forgiveness for the time he asked him to write a prescription for pain pills. A relieved Orson says no need to apologize. Mike feels better. MA tells us Orson feels only relief "ignoring the feelings of guilt and shame rising within him." We see him walk by the sign again oblivious.
Quick Credits
We see Carlos at the kitchen island feeling around for his food as MA tells us that Carlos had only worried about one thing since becoming blind: that the people in his life would come to see him as a burden. But we see that they don't as Tom and Orson lead him to a car, a neighbor drops off his mail, and the paper boy dropping off the paper. Everyone's willing to help but Gaby. She reads him the sports pages. (In an inside joke she's reading about the San Antonio Spurs).Carlos complains about carrot squares in his soup. She reaches into his soup and grabs them out. He apologizes for being such a handful. She says she's trying to be sensitive to his needs and then puts the smackdown on taking him to run errands since she can do them faster without him.
Gaby joins the girls at a lunch already in progress at the pizzeria by saying "sorry I'm late, blind husband, you know the drill." Bree is excited Gaby has arrived so she can announce invitations to the Founders Ball, an annual black tie affair that she, of course, organizes. She complains about the amount of work it takes but is secretly thrilled. Susan tells Katherine, who is not familiar with it, that Bree always gets to present an award to someone who's done something extraordinary. Gaby jokes they should give it to whoever gives Edie her bikini wax. Edie giggles and throws a French fry at Gaby. Katherine offers to help Bree. The girls get tense, Bree says it would be lovely. Edie bravely observes that the pair would kill each other, reminding them of the pie incident. While holding Katherine's hand Bree says it's important to put things aside after all they've been through and be friends. Lynette, pouring wine for the table, observes that she faced cancer and a tornado but is running from this pairing.
Rick approaches Lynette at the pizzeria counter. They awkwardly talk about how great they are. Tom approaches the pair looking tight. Rick is dropping off a special bottle of wine. Tom wants to know what's up. Rick says he's opening his own place... right around the corner from Tom and Lynette's opining that there's plenty of business for both places. A customer recognizes Rick and rhapsodizes about his osso bucco. Rick gives him the business card of the new place and steam starts pouring from Tom's ears. (Jason Gedrick is looking pale.)
Later that night Orson is tossing and turning in bed and goes downstairs. Susan also wakes up and finds Orson in her kitchen. (Apparently shirtless.) She's come to retrieve the last piece of Bree's chocolate cake and turns around to discover Orson is in fact naked. (They shoot it so the piece of cake covers up Orson's, um, piece of cake.) Susan predictably freaks. Orson keeps repeating "I had to do something." Susan goes back upstairs.
Over at the Scavo's, Tom is getting in at 11, much to Lynette's dismay. (She's now got a short blond tuft of hair coming in.) In the bathroom, where he's conspicuously washing his hands, Tom admits he was stewing over Rick. He says he's over it and taking the competition as a challenge. He compliments her hair.
The next morning in the Mayer kitchen Susan queries Orson about his naked kitchen wanderings. Orson seems confused as if he doesn't remember. He persists that he doesn't know what she's talking about. Bree thinks that Susan had a naughty dream about Orson. Orson calls this understandable since Mike is away. Susan insists it's true. Bree suggests a warm bath with a romance novel.
Gaby is teetering in high heels and a black cocktail dress towards Price Warehouse where she runs into Lynette who wonders what her sexy model friend is doing among the hoi polloi. Gaby says "I'm poor now, I have to mingle with the unwashed masses." When asked the same question Lynette says Oh I've been unwashed for years." Gaby marvels at the size of the parking lot and gripes about the lack of valet and the waste of handicapped spaces. Lynette explains that Gaby could probably get a handicapped placard.
In the Mayfair kitchen Katherine and Bree are going over Founders Ball plans and Dylan is bringing cookies upstairs for a study date with Julie. Bree has a huge scrapbook, Katherine acts all agreeable until Bree asks for her input and... you can see where it's going. Katherine busts out her own huge scrapbook and they "compromise."
Dylan and Julie gripe about working the Founders Ball and then Julie tells her it's actually great wearing a white dress and meeting people all night. She then points out Dylan is a buzzkill for holing up in her room obsessing about her dad's alleged murder. It's time to get out and mingle!
Back at the table it's a scrapbook-off as Bree and Katherine duel over centerpieces and Katherine condescends to Bree about the provinicial taste of Fairview vs. Chicago.
The police are on the Scavo's front porch with a few questions about vandalism. She sighs and calls the kids and they clarify it's about a brick being thrown through the window at a new place called Rick's. Did they see anything suspicious around 10:45? Tom looks right at Lynette and says he was home by 8 to help her with the kids. She backs him up. He rushes off for the lunch rush.
It's another sunny afternoon at Price Warehouse and Gaby is happily placing her bushel of paper towels in the back of her car. Which is parked in a handicapped spot. (She is again dressed in a party dress and heels and since we see her so often in sweats, jogging or doing yoga, I have to ask why is she dressed like this to go shopping?) A man in a wheelchair rolls by and confronts her saying she doesn't look handicapped to him. She explains. The man says the placard is for Carlos then. And Gaby reasonably retorts, "How is he going to park the car if he can't see? Feeling pretty stupid now aren't you?" He blocks her entrance to the car and says she's got a lot of nerve since he was forced to park by the dumpster way in the back. She tells him not to play the victim with her: "I have to walk in heels all day. You get to sit in a chair and roll." (Yikes, Marc Cherry is going to get some complaints about this one). He is outraged, he tries to call the cops and she wrestles the phone away and throws it. Another man in wheelchair rolls up and is informed of the sitch and calls her a bitch since he had to find street parking. The first guy sends second guy for the secutity guard. Gaby fights with him and rolls him away and admits "well its official, I'm going to hell." And then she hightails it outta there.
At the Scavo restaurant Lynette and the kids show up. Lynette wants to know why Tom lied to her, forced her to lie and if he knows that perjury is "like this whole big thing." She busts him for the brick. He says he just went to check out the construction and then when confronted with the big Rick's picture window he snapped. Lynette says it's over now, why is he still so mad? As he begins to yell at her that he's still hurt, Parker, Preston and the little spawn of Satan whose name I can't remember come around the corner to eavesdrop. He says he understands why Rick tried to steal Lynette but that he's still upset that she acted like it was possible and that it changed the way he looks at Lynette. It's kind of heartbreaking. She insists that nothing ever happened. He says he's not looking for an apology, he's just explaining the brick.
Susan awakens in a chair to the sound of the front door opening. Through it she spies Orson, once again naked, standing on the sidewalk. She's all "aha, you thought I was crazy! Actually you're crazy." He starts mumbling "I didn't mean to do it. I didn't mean it Mike." Susan's all "Mike? The hell?" She finally realizes he's sleepwalking. She slaps him. He's perplexed as to why she hit him. He then freaks out because he's naked and runs inside.
Covered in a pink blanket and drinking coffee in the kitchen Orson is confused since he's never been a sleepwalker before. Susan wonders if something is bothering him. He says he doesn't think so. She mentions him mentioning Mike outside. He asks what he said. When convinced he didn't reveal anything he tells Susan it's time for the Hodges to move out.
Carlos is listening to headphones on the couch and Gaby tries to convince him to go out and "have some fun" and that handicapped people, like the two feisty guys in wheelchairs she met, go out all the time. He doesn't want to be a burden. She gets him up and drives to the post office and has him wait in the car as she drops off some letters. At each stop the same thing happens. She just wants him to sit in the car and be blind so she can have a handicapped spot. He takes off when she goes to get a manicure. She runs down the street looking for him. He's being led by a kid. He's annoyed. An older gentleman stops his car and asks if that's Gaby's Aston Martin (!) in the handicapped spot. Carlos sputters that he can't believe Gaby got a handicapped placard to exploit his blindness for a better parking spot. She asks why she shouldn't get something out of this and cries about how things have gone for them, but not in an evil Gaby way but because she worries about how he is without her. (Well, it's semi-evil).
It's Founders Ball time! Let's found something! Katherine and Bree are buzzing around the ballroom double-checking things. Bree is aghast at Katherine putting pear slices in the Waldorf salad. Bree wants the traditional apples, Katherine thinks the tradition needed some jazzing up. (They both look fabulous. Katherine in a burgundy V-neck gown with an updo and Bree with her red tresses loose over a silver green sparkly number). Katherine has in fact commandeered the entire menu and wants nothing to leave the kitchen without her tasting it first.
At the Solis' Carlos is struggling with his cufflinks. He looks sad. Gaby does it for him. He apologizes for what he's putting her through. She says if it were anyone but him it wouldn't be worth it. He asks how he looks, she says he looks handsome, and he does. He says she looks more beautiful than ever. Just a hunch.
Bree is about to taste some dip in the kitchen when a chef informs her there was a refrigeration problem and not to eat it since it might make her sick. She offers to throw it out and he thanks her and asks her to tell her boss. Incensed - "she is not my boss!"- Bree is about to toss it when a committee member comes in, informs her the room looks great and that the committee has decided to have Katherine present the night's big award. Bree is incensed. With dip in hand yet again Katherine intercepts and reminds her that she wanted to taste everything before it left the kitchen. Bree gets a great bad idea and devilishly says "dig in." Katherine does.
The ball is now in full swing, the Scavos and the Solis' are hanging with Orson at a table. Bree table touches and Gaby compliments Bree and Katherine's hard work. She and Lynette express amazement at the pair working together without mutually assured destruction. At that moment Katherine comes busting out of the kitchen running for the ladies room. Bree smiles and says they should have more faith in people.
Bree goes into ladies room where Katherine is praying to the porcelain god. Katherine is worried there's something wrong with the food. Bree assures her she's the only one getting sick and says she should go home. Katherine says she can't since she has to present the award. Bree offers to do it. Katherine says she can get it together and that it's important to her.
Awards time. Old committee lady introduces Katherine who's hair is disheveled and can barely open her watery eyes. Katherine struggles. Bree complains under her breath. Gaby and Lynette wonder what's up since Bree always does this. Bree continues to mutter about what a backstabbing spotlight grabber Katherine is. It turns out the award is going to Bree! Oops. She calls Bree a pillar of the Fairview Community. Bree comes up, and as Katherine hugs her she whispers in Bree's ear "I know you tried to poison me." Bree collects herself and gives her surprise thanks. (If Bree normally gives this award wouldn't, by the night of the event, she know who it was going to? In order to prepare some remarks at least?)
Lynette gets a call on her cellphone from Andrew, who you may remember works at the Scavo's pizzeria. He is not calling to check in on the Founders Ball. Turns out, Rick's place just went up in flames. She's horrified. He tells her that he doesn't know how it started. Lynette turns and sees that Tom's chair is empty. He then walks back into the ballroom looking shady.
It's the end of the night and Katherine is at the bar still looking peaked but managing to keep down red wine. Bree tells her the photographer is asking to take their picture. First Katherine wants to talk. Bree wants to leave it at misunderstanding of the situation. Katherine, however, is confused, she really thought things were going well and they were having fun. So the whole poisoning thing sort of took her off guard. She wants to know what the straw was that broke Bree's back or if she was planning to kill her all along. Bree explains that among her group of friends they each have their niche: "Gabrielle's the glamourous one, Susan's the adorable one, Lynette's smart, Edie's... Edie and I'm the domestic one, the organizer, the one who knows that there are three tines in a dessert fork. I'm the one who gets teased for that. That's who I am. That's also who you are." Katherine is failing to see the problem here (and she's crying, in a quietly controlled way, of course). Bree admits she doesn't really know how to be friends with Katherine, who remarks that this is a shame since she understands Bree so much better than the others. She points out that their controlling nature masks their insecurities and how this could actually make them best friends. Bree gets it but still seems uncomfortable.
Julie and Dylan, in their white dresses, get their photos snapped with the other teen greeters. Dylan admits that it was fun and that it was good to get out of her head. Katherine and Bree come over and get pictures with the girls. Dylan grabs her mom's arm affectionately. Julie sneaks into her house and runs into Orson on the stairs, sleepwalking again. He's fully clad and saying "I'm sorry I ran you over Mike." Julie is predictably, but understandably, freaked out.
Mary-Alice Voice Over: MA tells us that blindness is "an affliction that prevents people from seeing what's right in front of them" as we watch Carlos open his door and feel around for the newspaper; "like the wives who can't detect the jealousy that consumes their husbands" as Lynette opens the paper in the Scavo kitchen and the banner headline reads "Arson Suspected in Restaurant Fire"; "the women unable to see that a rival might also be a friend" as Bree waves to Katherine as they pick up their papers; "The men who stay oblivious to the guilt that lies deep within them" as Orson opens the paper and Julie peers at him with furrowed brow; "yes the world is filled with those who cannot see. The most dangerous are the ones who stay blind to the evil within their own hearts. How do we protect ourselves from these people? First we have to open our own eyes and find them before they find us" as male hands clear away debris on a cluttered table, open the paper, and then draw a red circle around a picture of Dylan and Katherine on the society page of the paper.
