The title of the episode "Smiles of a Summer Night", comes from the 1955 film of the same title. Like almost all the other episode titles, this one has a connection to Stephen Sondheim, as his 1973 musical 'A Little Night Music' is based on the film.
Lynette says: "He was getting so emotional. It felt like the last 20 minutes of Brian's Song". Their friendship helps Piccolo through tough times when he is diagnosed with cancer. Piccolo died in 1970, at age 26, from an aggressive form of germ cell testicular cancer.
