Affairs of the Hearts (1909)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Here's another winning animated film from French director Emile Cohl. In this four- minute film, Cohl tries to draw hearts in various forms and the end result is quite charming. The film starts off in space as we see stars draw closer to one another and they turn out to be hearts. From here the picture frame is in the shape of a heart and we see various objects come into play, all in the shape of hearts. This includes humans who have heads that are shaped of hearts and sometimes various hearts just dance around the frame. Fans of the early animation are certainly going to enjoy this as the drawings are quite nice and while there's not really a story on display, the images alone are rather sweet, innocent and charming all at once.
