- Picard and his team are pitted against the Romulans and the synthetics of Coppelius in a final confrontation.
- A final confrontation on the synthetics' homeworld, Coppelius, pits Picard and his team against the Romulans, as well as the synths who seek to safeguard their existence at all costs.
- Narek reaches the Artifact and is found by Narissa. Narek had been instructed to destroy the planetary defense orchids, so that the Romulans can attack without any obstruction, and this would give a clear reason to the Synthetics to activate the beacon.
Rios and Raffi are on the La Sirena. They are trying to fix the ship with a mysterious tool given to them by the Synthetics. The tool works on imagination. One imagines the fix needed and the tool makes it happen. The ship powers up. Narek reaches the La Sirena and is followed by Elnor who tracked him from the Artifact. He convinces Raffi, Rios, and Elnor to help him destroy the synthetics' beacon. He says the Synthetic higher beings will destroy all organic life in the known Galaxy.
Narek narrates the story of Romulan history of Ganmadan. The story began in the distant past, with some Romulans believing it occurred before their ancestors arrived at Vulcan, with a pair of Khalagu, the twin sisters Seb-Cheneb (The Destroyer) and Seb-Natan (The Foreteller). After the death of Seb-Natan from a burst heart while playing her drum, Seb-Cheneb blew the horn of a pale Ganmadan, summoning the Ch'Khalagus (demons) who brought about the Thousand Days of Pain. Narek, believed the story was not a prophecy. He believed it was history and that it could happen again.
Jurati works with Soong to complete Maddox's work on downloading a person's consciousness into a Golem body The Romulan fleet is led by Commodore Oh. Rios, Raffi, and Elnor pretend to hold Narek prisoner as they walk into the Synthetics settlement where the transmitter is being built. Their plan is to destroy the transmitter with molecular grenades.
Jurati frees Picard and the pair escape to La Sirena, which Picard flies to confront and stall the Romulans. Oh orders the fleet to sterilize the entire planet, but the Orchids rise to engage the Romulan fleet and to distract them for a few minutes. Narissa targets La Sirena with the Artifacts' defenses but is stopped and killed by Seven of Nine.
Soong discovers that Sutra worked with Narek to convince the other synthetics to agree with her plan, and he incapacitates her. But there isn't enough time for Soong to explain his reasons to Soji. Soji believes that Soong is a human and hence trying to protect his kind. Soji foils the attempt to destroy the beacon and activates it.
Picard calls Soji to reconsider her decision. Picard tells Soji that he will sacrifice his own life to change her mind. Meanwhile Jurati uses the Synthetics tool on board the La Sirena to fashion an image multiplier that gives the impression that the planet is defended by an entire fleet and not a single ship. Picard begins to succumb to his illness, but Jurati prolongs his life long enough for him to distract the Romulans until a Starfleet armada arrives in support, led by Riker.
Picard again speaks to Soji and asks her to prove everyone wrong. She is not the Destroyer. Picard says that the Federation trusts her to make the right choice. This gives Soji the choice to turn the beacon off herself, which she does, and the Romulans retreat.
Picard dies after Jurati and Soong transfer his consciousness into a device holding Maddox's copy of Data's consciousness. There, Picard once again "meets" Data and Picard realizes that Data sacrificed his life to save Picard and was happy to do so. Data asks Picard to erase his consciousness when he awakens in the real world. Data says that mortality gives meaning to human life and that however briefly, he wanted to live like a mortal. Picard says goodbye to Data before awaking in a synthetic "Golem" body. Picard keeps his promise to Data and deactivates Maddox's copy of Data's consciousness.
After the Federation lifts the ban on synthetics, Picard and Soji set off in La Sirena with Rios, Raffi, Jurati, Elnor, and Seven of Nine.
