The box-office is in the news a lot of late, with Avatar now on the verge of surpassing Titanic to become the biggest grossing movie of all time, both domestically and worldwide (it surpassed Titanic worldwide yesterday). Once Avatar overtakes Titanic, however, most of the major records will belong to a handful of titles: Avatar (all time, biggest second through seventh weekends), The Dark Knight (fastest to reach $100 through $450 million, plus the biggest opening weekend of all time), E.T. (most weekends at number one and most weekends in the top ten) and New Moon (highest gross in a single day).
However, there are still plenty of other box-office records in existence, though most of them are seldom spoken of. I happen to absolutely love box-office numbers, and over the course of my time with Pajiba, BoxOfficeMojo is probably the site I visit more often than any other, save for IMDb...

It would be nice to be able to say that the Coens are finally getting some drawing power, but I suspect the insane cast of Burn After Reading -- Pitt, Clooney, Malkovich, Swinton, McDormand -- had something to do with its exceptionally strong $19.4 million bow, the Coens' strongest ever. It barely beat out The Family That Preys, which opened to $18.02 -- slightly below par for Tyler Perry, though still nabbing the highest per-screen average in the top 10 on just over 2000 screens.
The third-place, $16.5 million take for Righteous Kill seems about right: a compromise between the draw of De Niro and Pacino, and the toxic buzz surrounding the film. As for The Women, $10 million isn't exactly gangbusters, but probably more than Picturehouse had any right to expect given that the movie came out of nowhere.
Anna Faris's The House Bunny has turned into a minor hit; it took a 22% drop from last weekend,...

Do I smell like Toronto? That's because I just got back from the film festival they have up there, and the scent of independent film still lingers. (It smells like Patricia Clarkson.) So I am very much in the mood for this week's edition of the Indie Spotlight, which is all about what's opening beyond the multiplexes this weekend!
Six flicks hit the big screen today: Flow: For Love of Water, Forgiveness, Greetings from the Shore, Moving Midway, Proud American, and Towelhead. Here's the scoop on each of them.
Towelhead
What it is: A dark comedy from Six Feet Under creator (and American Beauty writer) Alan Ball, based on Alicia Erian's novel about an adolescent Arab-American girl living in Texas during the first Gulf War.
What they're saying: Cinematical liked it when it premiered...

After a session topped by the limpest No. 1 opening in five years, industry boxoffice should rebound significantly this weekend with five wide openers, including three likely to hit the double-digit millions.
Overture's "Righteous Kill," starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, is a consensus favorite -- though no sure shot -- to top the weekend with an opening in the mid- to high-teen millions. The rare pairing of the longtime A-listers is the biggest draw for the cop thriller.
"We targeted the older male audience, and it looks like they're going to come," Overture marketing maven Peter Adee said. "From the tracking, it looks like the younger males are going to come as well."
Women could be another matter, given the presence of more female-friendly openers among the competition. Overture executives hope the usual appeal of Pacino and De Niro with older women will prompt a late surge in date-night support for "Kill.
