A very nice bit of BBC religious programming that is as entertaining as it is educational
I&M Caterers are based in Salford, Manchester but work across the UK on account of their market of serving only kosher food. This documentary focuses on the company as they prepare all week for delivery of two weddings and a bar mitzvah in different parts of the midlands and the north of England on one Saturday. With the strict laws of the Jewish faith to consistently meet, the film interviews the advisory council known as the "kosher cops" who regulate the sector and also inspect kitchens and events to ensure adherence to the rules.
I wasn't sure what this film would be about but it was the title that caught my eye and made me watch. Although it is very short and goes by really quickly, the film is actually a very good overview of the Jewish kosher laws. The subject could have been as dull and "educational" as a dry history lesson on a sunny day but, by using the reality-hook of filming the work of a real kosher caterer, the subject comes to life, is energetic and very easy to get into and follow.
The detail of the law is not delved into but you do get a feel for some of it quite easily but rather the film seems to work more on the sweeping overview about the challenges of it, why it is done, the consequences (in the laws' terms) of not doing it and so on. It also brings in the structure in place to regulate the law both within the business itself but also the advisory body. It is a very nice bit of BBC religious programming that is as entertaining as it is educational
