There’s something creepy about fraternities and sororities, right? They have such silly rules and seemingly smart kids all turn into lemmings to join their ranks. It’s strange. And that’s what’s at the heart of the new film, “The Line.”
As seen in the teaser, “The Line” follows a group of kids all attempting to get a foot in the door of the most prestigious fraternity on campus. However, as you might expect, things get out of hand, as young men attempt to do anything to land a spot in the frat and to earn a higher social status.

You may feel like you’ve seen plenty of films about college fraternities before, but you’ve never seen one quite like “The Line,” being released by Utopia in select theaters on October 18, with an expansion on October 23.
Director Ethan Berger’s film is way, way more than a “problem picture” about the evils of hazing and other negative aspects of campus Greek life, nor is it a comedy in the “Animal House” mode. It’s a deeply absorbing character study about why fraternities are appealing in the first place — one that then takes quite a turn in a very suspenseful direction to become an outright thriller. Watch the teaser trailer for “The Line” above, a IndieWire exclusive, set to the sweet sound of “neggy” by Husky Loops.

Exclusive: Utopia will be teaming with Lionsgate on the stateside theatrical release of Francis Ford Coppola’s dystopian epic, Megalopolis when it hits theatres on Sept. 27.
Utopia will create and implement specialty marketing, word-of-mouth, and non-traditional theatrical distribution initiatives targeting moviegoers.
Utopia as behind such movies as the critically acclaimed Shiva Baby and the Oscar shortlisted Holy Spider.
Said Coppola: “I am confident we are in great hands with Lionsgate, and Robert and his team at Utopia will be a tremendous addition. They have proven that there is success in an artist-first approach while also making bold moves, especially at a time when our film business often shies away from daring endeavors. I know Utopia will help Megalopolis discover untapped audiences and opportunities for its theatrical launch alongside Lionsgate.”
Added co-founder Robert Schwartzman: “The visionary, inventive, and cinematic epic that is Megalopolis is exactly the kind of film that excites us at Utopia.

Wbd first launched a sports bloc on truTV earlier this year, and will expand the bloc further this fall.
For a long time, truTV wasn’t much more than a repository for reruns of comedy shows and reality programming. But Warner Bros. Discovery has been shifting the focus of the cable channel in recent months, as in March the company rolled out a nightly lineup of live sports content, including highlights, alternate broadcasts of live games appearing on TNT and TBS, and more. This week, Wbd announced it was ready to start expanding the sports offerings on truTV to reflect its newly-gained broadcast rights for college football and basketball, tennis, and more.
Key Details: TNT Sports will televise almost 1,000 hours of sports content on truTV this year, with more coming in 2025. Wbd has acquired the rights to Big East basketball, Mountain West and Cfp football, NASCAR, and the French Open in recent months.

You might think “The Line” is simply a film about illuminating the bad behavior of college fraternities and their dangerous hazing practices. You’d be wrong. Yes, that is the subject matter in question, but in the hands of first-time feature director Ethan Berger it’s a richly drawn, slow-burn character study that suddenly becomes a breathless thriller.
There’s a pivotal scene that occurs almost two-thirds of the way into the movie that marks the moment that “The Line” becomes one of the great suspense movies in some time. It’s a hazing scene in which the worst possible traits of Greek Life pledging are actually just a cover for a battle of wills between two guys who hate each other: Frat brother Mitch (Bo Mitchell) and pledge Gettys (Austin Abrams). Mitch is all “Animal House” bluster but deeply insecure — with a wealthy businessman father played by an imposing...

Warner Bros. Discovery wants to bring one of its “zombie” cable networks back to life with a big jolt of sports.
The media company intends to create a new nightly sports block for TruTV, the reality-series cable network that has largely been left to show endless episodes of the popular prank show “Impractical Jokers” and the caught-on-camera serial “World’s Dumbest.” In doing so, Warner no doubt hopes to create new value where there has only been a little. A new sports schedule would likely draw broader viewership and new ad dollars to the network, and might even spur cable distributors to accord the outlet more value in future carriage contracts.
The sports schedule will not consist only of simulcasts of NHL, MLB and NBA matchups that typically turn up on the company’s flagship TBS and TNT cable networks. Warner intends to air new “alterna-casts” that target different audiences; a...

Feats of derring-do, bouts of inspiration and a hearty show of strength for Nordic animation are but three of many motifs underscoring this year’s Cartoon Movie, which runs over March 5 – 7 in Bordeaux.
For this year’s 26th edition, the European animation sector’s flagship co-production and pitch forum will spotlight 55 overall projects while welcoming north of 800 industry delegates, with many making inaugural visits.
Boasting 22 new studios and producers alongside representatives from 42 sales companies and 76 distributors, the sterling attendance sheet also reflects animated fare’s growing importance in sales lineups and in festival curation – a fact echoed by the programers from Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight now attending for the first time.
Nearly finished titles such as Kristina Dufková’s stop-motion teen toon “Living Large” and the Yuletide adventure “SuperKlaus” will screen as sneak-peaks, while Italian auteur Alessandro Rak (“Cinderella the Cat”) will present his latest project, “The Little Prince of Shangri-La,...

Exclusive: Apple is moving forward with more original podcasts.
The company, via its Apple TV+ service, is launching The Pirate of Prague. The eight-part series is hosted by journalist Joe Nocera with the help of investigative journalist Peter Elkind and tells the story of the charming young Czech, Viktor Kožený.
Kožený smooth-talked his super-wealthy Aspen neighbors and a Wall Street titan into investing huge sums of cash to snap up Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil company, promising staggering returns. Sounds too good to be true, right?
It is the story of private jets, $20,000 dinners, and suitcases stuffed with cash. It’s also a tale about the collapse of communism, the free-for-all that followed, and the rise of the oligarchs. And it’s a story of plain-old human greed…of just how far the rich may go to get even richer.

New York’s Charly Bliss release ‘I Need A New Boyfriend,’ an effervescent new single that arrives with a hysterical video directed by the band’s Dan Shure.
“I think the best breakup songs are celebratory. Thankfully, decades of dating the wrong people has prepared me to write the emo, palm-muted breakup song of my dreams,” explains Eva Hendricks. “I was in Australia when Dan had the idea for this video, so we had to create a fictional Bliss Bar where we could all be together for Speed Dating Night. I bought the entire clay aisle of our local craft store and had a lot of fun creating a miniature version of the set that we could all be green screened into. Dan is the world’s best director and editor and did an incredible job pulling everything together. Please contact Cb Worldwide if you believe you may be entitled to a new boyfriend.

Angus Cloud is appearing onscreen for one of the last times in heist movie “Your Lucky Day.”
The “Euphoria” star, who died at age 25 in July 2023, leads writer-director-actor Daniel Brown’s feature directorial debut. Cloud plays drug dealer Sterling, who holds a convenience store hostage after he witnesses an older wealthy man win a $156 million lottery. Jessica Garza, Elliot Knight, and Mousa Hussein Kraish play witnesses, with Sterling Beaumon cast as a cop. The film is adapted from writer Brown’s 2010 short film of the same name, with Rider Strong in the role of Sterling.
“I had written the character based on people I had grown up with: guys who sold drugs and would start fights with frat boys or their stepdads, but who were also super protective and loyal to their friends,” Brown told Entertainment Weekly. “[Cloud’s] stories and outlook were so right on for the character, I just had to go for it.

A film based on Beyonce’s smash hit Renaissance World Tour is in advanced talks to distribute directly to AMC Theatres, sources with knowledge of the project told Variety.
Mega-agency CAA held preliminary talks with major studios and streamers two weeks ago, another source added, urging the players to be ready to bid on a project the icon has been developing for years — one that would include elements of her top-grossing 2023 live shows, parts of the long-gestating visual album “Renaissance” and a documentary-style account of making the record and building out the tour (Blue Ivy Carter cameos surely to come). Beyonce ultimately negotiated directly with the AMC.
The project is eyeing a Dec. 1 wide release, added insiders. By its end, the Renaissance World Tour is expected to gross close to $560 million in ticket sales, reports said.

On July 31 at 11:30 a.m., Oakland police officers responded to an emergency call, and Cloud was pronounced dead at the scene. Cloud had been dealing with the death of his father, who was buried a week before his death.
“The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend. Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence,” Cloud’s family said in a statement.

Rob Lowe, Burt Reynolds and Ice-t starred in a low-budget movie called Crazy Six in 1997. The movie, which told the story of powerful mafia families vying for control of the arms trade, was written by Galen Yuen, who is the focus of a new original podcast series for Apple.
However, Yuen isn’t your traditional feature film writer.
The series – Magnificent Jerk – follows journalist Maya Lin Sugarman, formerly of The Washington Post, on a journey to discover who her uncle really was.
Starting with a box of his forgotten screenplays, the series sees Lin Sugarman discovering that he was a member of a Chinese gang who went to jail before turning his life story into the Crazy Six screenplay (albeit with a few twists).
The series, which launches on September 18, comes from Pineapple Street Studios, the Audacy-owned company behind The Clearing and Heaven’s Gate.

To the list of TV series being turned into films we can now, finally add Murder, She Wrote. And we say, "finally" because this is one that you'd have enough cult appeal and a compelling hook to have headed to cinemas years ago. But according to Above The Line, the series, which starred Angela Lansbury as crime writer/ace sleuth Jessica Fletcher is the subject of a new potential film from Universal.
Power producer Amy Pascal has Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who wrote upcoming GameStop share affair comedy drama Dumb Money, attached to craft the script (though any forward movement on it will have to wait until the writers and actors' strike is over).
Murder, She Wrote ran on TV between 1984 and 1996. Lansbury's Fletcher outwitted criminals (and the police) and solved murders both in her home town of Cabot Cove and around the States/abroad.

Singer Billie Eilish paid tribute to the late “Euphoria” star Angus Cloud in a Lollapalooza music festival set, performing “Never Felt So Alone.”
The track, by Labrinth with uncredited vocals by Eilish, was previously featured during Season 2 of the intense HBO teen drama series and released as a single.
“Rip to Angus Cloud, everybody,” Eilish said as the song ended.
Eilish was headlining the opening night Thursday at the long-running, influential Chicago festival.
Cloud, who was open about his mental health struggles and was said to have also battled drug addiction, died Monday at 25. His cause of death has not been released. It came just a week after attending the burial of his father, who his family described in a statement as his best friend.
The song’s chorus repeats “And I never felt so alone, felt so alone” several times, while the verses include lyrics exploring a close relationship...

Halle Bailey's solo era is finally here. After her praiseworthy leading role in Disney's "The Little Mermaid" live-action remake this past May, the younger half of Chloe x Halle released new music on her own on Aug. 4 with her debut solo single, "Angel."
The 23-year-old singer teased a short clip of the piano-backed track's music video on July 31, which shows nostalgic glimpses of herself from an infant to now. The full visual, directed by Wendy Morgan, shows the songstress in elegant scenes surrounded by water and dancers as she pours her heart out with lyrics like: "Black girl here, Black girl with the Black girl hair / Took a little sun kiss just to look like this / God-sent, you're an angel / Angel, angel, angel."
"Angel" marks the first track Bailey has ever released without her sister, Chlöe, and arrives more than three years after the sister duo released their sophomore album,...
