an expressionistic view...
ops-5253526 March 2021
On a young teenage girl developing from the egg and catterpillar stage, then transform into a hard shell pupae of grief, till she wakes up and spreading her wings of beauty and opportunity in a life-tranformation called puberty. Its a film about angst, gender identity, sex, nudity ,fumbling , experimenting, drugs, alcohol and most of all which is the sadest part, a mothers neglect of her children. Its summer hot berlin im sommer urlaub, its urban life in urban apartments with strikingly realistic urban children, in a film thats made in such european/german style that ill bet youll never find such a plot in american moviemaking. There are some flaws and floskls here and there, but the director has been able to make a film that makes your butterfly tingle in your guts, even in an old and grumpy man as me, therefore a little recommend on this one.

First time

Perfectly written that makes us feel our youth , first loves, broken hearths. The performance of the leading actress is striking. The different cultures and their affections in Berlin is really well described in the school.

This movie makes you feel young again

Wonderful cinematography and film language that brings the spectator very close to the protagonists and right into their struggles. Great performance by the main actress and cute metaphor with her little pet caterpillars. Pleasantly light coming-of-age story.

A teenager's journey exploring herself in the company of her sister and friends.

A few thought provoking conversations besides touching on topics like sex, gender, drugs, relationships, etc.

Simple, beautiful, instigating, elegant, thoughtful, thought provoking.

This movie is for the ones who knows what being a fish out of water feels like, this moment when you realize you are different and even if nobody understands you, you have yourself and always will.

It tells in the most beautiful way how it is to grow up seeing a distorted world through a teenage perspective.

Honest and beautiful

Excellent film that is not so much a coming-of-age story as a coming-out-to-yourself story. Charmingly told with just enough working class grit and multiculturalism to give it a level of veracity rarely seen in this kind of film. Highly recommended.

Strong German Coming of Age Film, with excellent Central Performance.
scheevers-5020024 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the stronger coming of age films I've seen and it's sadly barely spoken about.

Nora, a shy 14 year old hangs with her 16 year old sister Jule and her best friend Aylin. As they spend most of their days basking in the sun, making out with the guys, smoking weed and hanging out at the Pool.

Nora is clearly uncomfortable with the whole thing, so it's no surprise when someone like Romy comes along who offers her a chance to break out of her shell. Nora takes it with both hands. Romay is the cool indie hipster with short blonde hair who seems total exotic to young Nora.

The film certainly lays in the metaphor of the caterpillar's life cycle. With Nora having a colony of caterpillar's next to her bed. It's a little over done in the film I find, but it makes sense of a butterfly metamorphosis and a coming of age film.

The film deals nicely and with compassion on things such as a young teenage girls first period with Nora's discomfort and shame taking centre stage rather than leading her to become the subject of humiliation from her classmates. This is when she first meets Romy who shows her kindness and helps her out instead of mocking her.

I did think the first blossoming of romance for Nora with Romy isn't giving enough time. And it ends pretty much as quickly as it starts. I don't know if any watchers of the film will enjoy the ending with Romy but I thought it was fine and shows Nora doesn't need her anymore. But again don't go into the film expecting a Lesbian teenage romance, it barely gets 20 minutes if that of the film.

Lena Urzendowsky as Nora is fantastic, she reminds me a bit of. Bea Powley in The Diary of a Teenage Girl. That you totally buy her growth from a innocent sweet teenager into a young woman by the film's end. She's one to watch for the future. Jella Haase as Romy, is good in the amount of time she's given. Although she was a bit tougher to buy as a teenager. Lena Klenke as Jula, Nora's older sister was great.

It's not the greatest coming of age film ever made but it deserves more eyes put on it. Just for lead performance alone.

Warning: Spoilers
Coming-of-age films are a popular genre to delve into, and often utilized to perfection - as is the case in this breathtaking and well acted drama, that is sure to be relatable to all who have grown up in some capacity, as well as showcasing some great filmmaking.

Overall, a very finely acted, cinematographied, cut and edited piece - with brilliant shooting. Truly very beautifully put together in every sense of the word.

Definitely recommended for any lover of film, and a great use and exploratiom of the coming-of-age youth film genre.

Very much recommended and deserving of a watch, as it is very beautifully put together!
