Millennium Bugs threw me back to the 90s!

I loved this movie! From the start, I was immediately transported back to sitting in my mother's living room binge-watching early Kevin Smith films. This film shows the ingenuity of a filmmaker who was obviously raised and bred on 90s indies.

good friendship indie

It's the last days before the millennium and the Y2K bug fear is rampant. Kelly (Katy Erin) and Miguel (Michael Lovato) are best friends. Kelly is reckless and had squandered her inheritance from her parents. Miguel wants to be a comedian, but his parents want him to continue his schooling.

Katy Erin is great although part of that is the interesting character. I would like a funnier actor to play Miguel. It may even help his standup scene. Kelly and Miguel have an unrelenting platonic relationship. She seems to be gay. The movie needs to play that up. Some opportunities in the story have been left on the table. It's a good friendship indie movie.

Brilliant portrayal of the psychological truth of the last days of the 90's!

If Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket was written by Alex Cox, directed by Richard Linklater and set in New Mexico, you'd have Millennium Bugs! From the opening credits it was obvious to me that Alejandro Montoya Marín has something engaging, original and poignant to say about where we were during the peak of Western Civilization. This film feels both deeply personal and important on a macro level. Artistic voices from my own Gen X experience, or maybe more accurately put - Gen Mex, have often been overlooked in the last 20 years by audiences and Hollywood alike. I was transported back to an analog time where real connections with real people meant everything. The characters are interesting, fleshed out and deliver quick, witty banter that feels like a special time before cell phones and social media. The music grasps the angst and wonder of a generation that was furiously resisting mindless consumerism. I highly recommend this film for everyone and anyone who refuses to let their human spirit be devoured by their online avatar.

Alejandro Montoya Marin has done it again!!

Warning: Spoilers
Millennium Bugs is truly an amazing film and shows Alejandro Montoya Marin's ability as a filmmaker to be simultaneously funny and nostalgic all the while showing his capacity to show a raw and exposed side like he's done once before with his award-winning short film drama "Leslie". From Kelly's emotional voicemail to Miguel's confrontation with his parents, Marin showed how two friends who didn't buy into the Y2K hysteria yet still as the new year draws near experience pangs of regret, guilt and fear there might not be a tomorrow to bring about some form of absolution. This blend of humor, emotional exposure and 90s nostalgia shows exactly the type of storytelling indie film has to offer and what many storytellers are capable of.

The pure essence of 90's Indie Films. Viva Indie!

If you love Indie Film, I highly recommend this film. Alejandro Montoya Marin once again shows his skills with this well written and directed film. The two main characters, Kelly and Miguel are brilliantly acted by Katy Erin and Michael Lovato and really capture the angst, existentialism, and humor of living in your twenties while set against the backdrop of a potential apocalypse from the Y2K computer bug. In it's own quirky way, it shows depth of emotion and the importance of friendships during one of the most transformative times of anyone's life, let alone during the risk of an impending apocalypse.

Since his first days on RR's reality competition show, Alejandro has shown his ability to tirelessly craft a cinematic narrative and doesn't disappoint, yet again!
