So hard to watch.

This movie was so hard to watch in places. What this young girl went through is just unimaginable ..these sort of religious but cases should be held accountable for what they have done and her parents too.

Religion ist das opium des volkes

Highly recommended for any parent who struggles with their LGBTQ child. May it open their eyes to the inhumane treatment too often experienced by many children of indoctrinated parents. This movie captures a lot of real life scenarios children who have been abused by religious teachings deal with

Extreme religious zealots justify their methods of abuse
mloessel23 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Alex Cooper is raised Mormon and makes the mistake of telling her parents she is gay. The story reveals the abuse Alex must endure to change her from being gay and going straight again. The abusers are a Mormon couple who use a radical form of conversion that includes Alex wearing a backpack full of rocks. At the end of the story we learn that she had to endure 8 months of abuse. The ending credits provide information that such an extreme conversion process is going on today.

Not dramatic enough plus acting wasn't great
phd_travel5 October 2019
This story about a girl sent to conversion therapy could have been more dramatic. The acting by the lead actress seemed laid back. She didn't act upset enough while being trapped and punished.

Biased but True.

I'll start off by saying that everyone needs to watch this movie and realize that this is a real thing. Society is oblivious to all of this and do not realize that people go through this every single day. Maybe I'm biased because I went through something similar but it's terrible. It's terrible when it's your own parents because who do you turn to then? Who do you turn to when your parents take away everything including your friends? This movie really puts things into perspective for people on the outside. Maybe it'll change your mind about things.

When Alex Met Frankie
lavatch30 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When young Alex Cooper met Frankie Jackson, it was love at first sight. Then, the young woman told her parents that she was gay, and her world collapsed. The strict Mormon parents packed her off from her home in Victorville, California to the Simms couple in Utah. Most of the film deals with the dehumanizing treatment of Alex Cooper all in the interest of "conversion therapy."

Quiet honestly, this film is hard to take. It merits only an average rating because there could have been a better approach than the sustained period in which the protagonist is "trapped" in the home of the monsters, Johnny and Tiana Simms.

Even the end of the film was disappointing. After Alex finally gets linked up with a kind teacher and an attorney, we learn that finally she was freed from the torture house of the Simms. We also learn that the father eventually agreed to walk his daughter down the aisle to the altar in the event that she chose to marry a woman. But there was no mention about whether the parents were held liable for child endangerment or if the Simms couple was prosecuted for child abuse.

From her first spark of romance, poor Alex Cooper is expelled from the Garden of Eden and suffers a trial in purgatory that no one should have to endure. The performer playing the role of Alex was outstanding. But the graphic suffering she had to endure went on for too long in the tragic saga of a child held against her will. In writing, there is the adage that "less is more." The film would have been more insightful without the repetitive scenes of torture and abuse.

Damning indictment of the "ex-gay" movement
LifetimeUncorkedPodcast29 September 2019
The movie was well acted and serves its purpose for bringing to light an important topic of LGBTQ minors being held captive in conversion therapy. (Which is currently still legal in 33 state.)

Trigger warning for those sensitive to depictions of self harm and suicide.

I added an extra star for Wilson Cruz portraying Utah-based lawyer and champion for LGBTQ rights Paul C. Burke.

Pour It Up!

Terrible acting, disturbingly passive story
cetinnecee13 April 2020
The lead actress was terrible, she almost looked happy and content even when she had to carry rocks all around all day. But overall the story had a lot of missing points as well, like how passive the girl was by not even trying hard enough to escape, how full of love for her parents in that situation etc. Anyone else would at least accuse her parents and be a bit smarter about the situation, I was disturbed how passive and naive she was. Both the story and the acting was just terrible, waste of time.

So raw
rondo-3365724 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was literally shocked about how bad that movie was.

It's been a long time since I watched such a screwed up story made into a movie.

Main character is dumb. I KNOW THAT SHES THE VICTIM HERE, but she doesn't even try to really do anything about the situation. She was told by these parodies of a devout sadists that she's always lying. Watching her doing a bare minimum to prevent this injustice is incredible. She's so phlegmatic and passive. As if she was liking what these people did to her. I know it is based on a true story. It's understandable that this is sad and bad, but the movie is trash.

Love Is Love!
buckikris2 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this movie was really good, and hopefully it has awakened people about conversion therapy. I can't believe it is still legal in 33 states, it is cruel, inhumane, and ridiculous. Why can't people understand no one chooses their sex, and it being gay is not a choice. I don't understand why some parent are ashamed of their kid(s), because of their lifestyle. Alex's parent's were so distraught they traveled to Utah . They gave The Sim's custody of their daughter, to go through Conversion Therapy. They made her wear certain cloths, home school, stand in the wall with rocks in a book bag. She tried to kill herself do to this unlawful treatment;Luckily it was a failed attempt.

When I watched this movie it made me mad. To see what this couple did to this poor girl was a crime. Luckily Alex is a strong lady who fought back and was determined to seek help. After a failed suicide attempt, she thought it would be hopeless to find anyone in the state of Utah to help her. One day she was able to go back to school. She to a friend who was gay if someone could help her. Alex turned to the head of the gay and lesbian council of the school. She got Alex an attorney, and told those at the school if they were to contact the Sims they would go to jail. A great movie more people need to watch, Conversion Therapy should be BANNED. I can relate to Alex's story because I know what it's like to be different, and I'm glad she survived her horrific tale.

Special, sweet, tough
j-ganem30 September 2019
Some reviewers on this site will tell you it's a damning indictment of Alex's parents, but those people didn't watch the whole movie. If you are a religious person, of any persuasion, watch this movie. It is a compassionate and loving conversation of very tough ideas, told through the life story of one person.

Disgusting
johnnyboygrant17 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Absolutely disgusting that parents would do this to their kid. Religion... ALL religion should be banned. What these people believe is beyond ridiculous. Most kids give up their imaginary friends when they become an adult.
