In 39 AD Caligula rules Rome, and is known as the Mad emperor. 25 yrs earlier, Roman empire stretches from Atlantic Ocean to Egypt, 2 MM sq miles. Infra was key. Roads connected Rome to places like North Africa, France and Spain. AQueducts, Sewers and amphitheaters are Rome's gift to the world civilization.
Army has 300,000 soldiers. It is currently fighting Germania. Caligula (Ido Drent) is a boy who has spent his childhood in military camps near Germania. He is nephew of Tiberius (Craig Walsh-Wrightson) (The ruling emperor of Rome) and the son of a great general Germanicus (next in line to the throne). Germanicus trains Caligula to be a great warrior. Father and son are very close. Meanwhile Tiberius led the trial and execution of many senators. He is the 2nd Emperor of Rome. Augustus, the 1st Emperor of Rome, was the best it ever had. He managed to bring the empire together. But Tiberius was the Emperor of austerity. Tiberius wants to pass on the throne to his son and plots against Germanicus
Germanicus is assassinated in Germania, but the death looked accidental. Caligula is 7 yrs old and returns to Rome. Agrippina (Teressa Liane), Caligula's mother was convinced that Germanicus was poisoned. To keep Agrippina from spreading more rumors, Tiberius has her entire family (3 sons and 3 daughters) arrested, but Caligula manages to escape. Tiberius hold trials for the family. Agrippina is exiled. One elder brother is imprisoned and the other executed. Caligula and his 3 sisters are sent to live with their grandmother, under a close watch of Tiberius's soldiers. Caligula lived & grows under a consistent threat of elimination.
in 27 AD, Drusus, Tiberius's son dies at the age of 35. Tiberius suspects the head of the Praetorian Guard Sejanus. Sejanus presents himself as an option (As successor to the throne) to Tiberius. Tiberius is shocked at the betrayal, he grows paranoid and goes into a self imposed exile on the Island of Capri. He never returns to Rome. The Empire needed an Emperor and Tiberius selects Caligula. Tiberius lives a decadent lifestyle on Capri. In 31 AD, Caligula reaches Capri and is presented to Tiberius. Tiberius makes peace with Caligula by presenting Sejanus as the man who killed Germanicus. Tiberius eliminates Sejanus. Naevius Sutorius Macro ( Michael Morris) is appointed as the new head of the Praetorian Guard.
Tiberius has his 12 yrs old Grandson Gemellus on Capri as well. But Tiberius explains to Gemellus that he is not ready for the throne. Tiberius tells Caligula that he is considering naming him next in line, and challenges him to earn his trust. Tiberius gives a series of tests to Gemellus and Caligula, but Caligula was trained well by Germanicus and proves to be a far more capable leader. His decisions are practical and consider all scenarios and possibilities. Caligula is careful not to betray Tiberius's trust and Tiberius also encourages Caligula to participate in all sort of sexual orgies. Tiberius falls ill and is not expected to survive. Gemellus is 18 yrs old now. Caligula learns from Macro that his mother passed away a few yrs ago. In 37 AD, Tiberius decides that Caligula and Gemellus will rule together as co-regents.
