The second episode of John Esmonde and Bob Larbey's underrated comedy masterpiece 'The Other One'.
'Brian' ( Michael Gambon ) has booked a seat on a coach trip around Spain, but not included his friend and room-mate 'Ralph' ( Richard Briers ) because he knows him to be a 'lone wolf'. In fact, Ralph is dreadfully hurt when he finds out he has been excluded. He hires a mule to take around the sort of places not normally found on the map. Some time later, Brian spots the mule grazing by the side by the side of the road. But where is Ralph?
Another fine episode. It introduces the lovely Jill Kernan as holiday rep 'Sue Bainbridge' - she had earlier appeared in two other sitcoms by the authors, 'Please Sir!' and 'The Fenn Street Gang' as 'Penny Wheeler'. Your heart goes out to her at the beginning as she is badgered first by pedantic Brian, then conceited Ralph. There is a marvellous scene in an empty Spanish house as Brian explains that his wife left him because of mental cruelty - he bored her rigid. They even had sex on the same day of each week - Saturday. When she wanted a change, he told her: "Alright, put me down for Thursday!".
Funniest moment - Brian telling Ralph about how boring he is, and then when we next cut to Ralph he is sound asleep!
George Camiller, who plays the owner of Ralph's mule, was 'Giovanni' in the I.T.V. sitcom 'Mind Your Language'.
Finally, it looks like I spoke too soon on the subject of the James Bond films. I was glad to hear that Sky Movies had poached them from I.T.V. But the commercial network is giving them one last outing - again on Saturday afternoons! Methinks 'Auric Goldfinger' is working behind the scenes as an I.T.V. programme planner to try and wreck 007's reputation!
