Will this ever get better?
lillydav109 November 2020
I'm still waiting for that turning point where it'll suddenly become a good show. It's not awful and it's not great...it's below average. Something to put on while not having to fully concentrate. I don't care for most of the people in it and just want more CRM stuff to find out more about Rick Grimes!!!! Let's hope the acting gets better soon 😩

The episode delves into the dynamics between the characters, particularly focusing on tensions and unresolved issues
fernandoschiavi6 May 2024
The Endlings arrive at the Mississippi River where all of the bridges were destroyed by the military when things went bad, necessitating a boat crossing. However, there are no boats available, forcing the group to build their own makeshift boat out of supplies that they are able to scavenge from the area. Hope learns of Felix's plan to enlist Elton's help to turn the group around and angrily confronts them both about their behavior. Felix later admits to Iris that he needs Leo and his boyfriend Will to be alright because Felix was originally supposed to be the one to go before Leo asked him to stay behind and look after Hope and Iris for him.

With a herd closing in, the claustrophobic Elton is forced to crawl under the boat and fix a problem, but it is ultimately Felix who enables the boat launch just when it seems like they will have to abandon it. The Endlings successfully cross the river into Illinois where Huck departs on a scouting mission for a couple of days. In flashbacks, it's revealed that a five-year old Elton was the only survivor when the museum that his father worked at fell due to his father hiding Elton in a box in his office. Elton subsequently discovered that his father had turned and been put down by soldiers before Elton made his way to the Campus Colony on his own. While comforting Elton, Hope discovers that she had killed his mother on the Night the Sky Fell. Hearing a noise in the woods next to their camp, the Endlings encounter a teenage boy armed with a stick.

Episode five of "The Walking Dead: World Beyond," titled "Madman Across the Water," takes the young survivors on a challenging journey that tests their ingenuity and teamwork. The central focus of the episode is the group's attempt to cross a river, an endeavor that requires them to construct a makeshift raft from materials scavenged around an abandoned boathouse. This setting not only adds a sense of urgency and danger to their quest but also serves as a metaphor for the turbulent waters they must navigate in their interpersonal relationships.

As the group gathers materials and begins building the raft, the episode delves into the dynamics between the characters, particularly focusing on tensions and unresolved issues. Elton's backstory becomes a focal point, revealing his troubled past through a series of flashbacks that intertwine with the present challenges.

The process of building the raft serves as a critical test of the group's ability to work together. The scenes are well-executed, mixing technical survival skills with character development. Challenges arise not only from the physical task of constructing a viable raft but also from the interpersonal conflicts that escalate under pressure. The episode effectively uses these moments to highlight both the strengths and weaknesses of each character, making the storyline engaging and dynamic.

"Madman Across the Water" balances action with character exploration. The metaphor of navigating troubled waters is executed with finesse, reflecting both the literal and figurative challenges the group faces. While the episode excels in developing the backstory of Elton and building tension through survival challenges, it occasionally suffers from pacing issues, with some scenes feeling slightly drawn out. However, these moments do not significantly detract from the overall impact of the episode.

What's the point of felix
amw0774026 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
To stop a mini horde of zombies he puts fishing wire between two trees, then watches them instead of dispatching them, then looks shocked when they just walk around the trees. This is supposed to be set after fear, so why the big surprise that zombies attack, and why don't they use there flick knives on sticks to do something about it... So bored.

Warning: Spoilers
The only reason im watching now is to find out about Rick, couldn't care less about any of the awful characters. There is so much tedious writing and ridiculous actions from characters. When huck goes to the leave the group, dont split up she is told yet at the start they are told to split up by Iris at start of episode. Poundland rick can predict when a lightening strike is about to happen. Instead of letting the WALKERS come to your boat get one of the group lead them in a different direction? Iris still hasn't learnt to go for the head and throws herself at a WALKER..idiotic, there are too many heart to heart talks which bore the life out of everyone, i think there has been maybe 10mins of zombies in 5 episodes of a zombie apocalypse show and the rest is awful teen melodrama and atrocious writing, just tell me about Rick and end this farce

Blimey, and I thought FTWD was bad.
ninepee2 November 2020
What an absolute bore fest. This takes episode padding to a new level. Poor scripts, dreadful acting and nothing to pique my interest so far, apart from those small insights in to what the CRM are all about (which this episode was lacking).

I think I'm about to give up on this show.

Does anyone fact check?
mhorg20183 November 2020
More horrible writing. More terrible, lame, backstory. Far too many flashbacks. Still way too much smiling. This is a terrible show with some of the worst writing ever. Omaha is 670 miles to the shore of the Mississippi. Are we expected to believe that these dilly-dallying unrealistic teens who are still way too clean, covered that distance this quickly? I'm giving up.

DID SOMEONE GET PAID TO WRITE THIS GARBAGE?
jreeders5182 November 2020
The dialogue is sooooo bad. These are low rent actors for sure but what they have to spout is even worse. Story line is just terrible and these people are enhancing that handicap. Horrible show. Just pathetic.

Bring on the Dead!
buddybradley-226655 November 2020
If they can't take out these people, they'd never be able to get normally competent people. Maybe the dead just figure that these kids are too dumb to eat.

The discussion about how to make a steam boiler is pure baloney. It will kill everybody.

A show about the stupidest people on earth.

They can't find anything to burn while they are standing next to a broken down wooden dock?

This is truly the best you could come up with
mlitz-987554 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
One kid has claustrophobia cause his dad put him in a box and took 2 steps out the door and was eaten. Then thinks about it all episode. The one girl knows how to rig up a steam engine on parts just sitting around in a barn near by. The other girl knows how A/Cs work, to make a condenser because she read how they worked one time. The other kid who actually has some engineering experience says its kinda like his job back at base. The grow adults are agreeing to go along to New York to find the father. Mind you they dont even know where in new york. While there out searching around, random heat lighting hits an old electrical pole falls on a barn with zombies. You were expect them to start coming from the area where the pole opened up a side in the barn but no the door they were pushing against just opens. At one point he uses fishing wire as a makeshift fence to hold back 15+ undead to buy time. The most believable part is making a raft. Alot of feelings hurt and crying back and forth.

Please stop the torture
therealsandeman6 November 2020
...and the horrible writing continues. Very inconvincible acting. These actors do not have a very high likability factor. At this stage you hope they will get bitten en just ..... disappear.

Please take it off air and let everyone involved go with their dignity somehow intact.....

"I just don't want anyone to die" waaah
buzzpark4 November 2020
Still is excruciatingly slow, still a portrayal of the weakest of humanity.

Apparently, these whiny little Gen Z emo babies don't want anyone or anything to die, including the zombies who happen to already be dead and are trying to kill them.

What I want to die is this awful, misguided, mis-cast, poorly-acted, and poorly-written series to disappear into obscurity so that we can all forget that it was ever part of the Walking Dead universe.

(Oops, did I say that in my out loud voice??)

Birth of a Future Psychopath
ddbmschmidt2 November 2020
I keep plodding along with this show because I still really enjoy the "mother ship" show ( but do not enjoy FTWD ). This show, especially this episode, suffers from woeful dialogue and painful acting....... I don't know what I was expecting a "Teenage Dead" show to be.... but I did expect better. Calling the Walkers "empties" is so bizarre it's compoundingly frustrating.... just call them "Walkers"... it's a TWD Universe.... someone should be calling them that..... name giving them the same as a bottle of beer that has been drunk..... "Elton".... oi! We see his origin story.... precious sweet little boy.... is stuck in a box while some kind of chaos happens outside... when he emerges he sees a man with no lower legs, pool of blood, hole in his head... no screams, no startled jumps, just casually grabs a bag and walks out... walks past TWO bodies - and again.... no vicseral reaction. "Elton", if he survives to adulthood, is going to be a psychopath... 100%

SNOOZE FEST CONTINUES
america-america-198392 November 2020
What a waste of time. Then again, if you have difficulty sleeping, just tune in to this soap opera. Lots of crying and weeping and Boo Hooing and backstory drama (not the interesting kind). Acting it atrocious, annoying, silly, very phoney. Writing is silly, boring, dull, all over the place. The Characters are dull, not interesting, and most that have watched this mess want them all dead! AMC and TWD missed all age groups for this mess.I cannot see US, UK, AU, CA preteens and teens watching this.....it is more Disney Kindergarten junk. Hey, for this episode, Fat Iris did manage to waddle over and fall on a walker....cameras cut away quick, so, can only imagine she squashed it to death.

Dumb characters continue.
cruise012 November 2020
1 out of 5 stars.

The teens continue there journey searching for there father. This time needing to build a raft to cross the river. Silas, Hope, Iris, and Elton are the most annoying characters ever written and the cast being even worst with there performances. At least Huck and Felix are the only characters to even care about. The script is filled with dumb dialogue. Annoying cliches with the direction. And its a series that is not getting anywhere.

The child actor for Elton is better than the main cast all together
torysheakitty19 April 2022
Why has no one died yet? The writers are making it way too easy for this group to survive. You would expect these kids that have grown up in the apocalypse to not be so normal?? It literally feels like regular bratty kids from our universe that have daddy issues. Completely unrealistic. I expected them to be more like Judith and Carl from the OG show. It would have been interesting to see since they never got much screen time. The show should have just been about the CRM. These kids cant act.

Gooey episode and worst of the season
hnt_dnl30 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
While I haven't been hating on this series as much as the general fandom, I felt like this one MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER is easily the worst of the season. Most fans are annoyed by Iris (and she's most definitely not the best character by any stretch), I find myself more annoyed by Elton. Of all the teen characters, I least believe that he could handle himself in the apocalypse. Hope, Silas, and Iris seem way more capable them Elton does. But more importantly, I find Elton's command of the English language to be both unrealistic and unhelpful. He has all this empty knowledge and is always spouting big words that I don't feel helps the group at all. And I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I couldn't stand the acting of the child playing the younger Elton the flashbacks. The kid was making all these big eyes in every scene and then awkward panicky breathing to simulate being scared and it was all so embarrassingly unnatural. I blame the director for this. And the scenes between the kid and his parents were so poorly written and acted. That whole family was so saccharine. It was like I was watching some Nickelodeon nonsense.

In addition to the annoying Elton, I also had some other issues with this episode. There was too much plot convenience as I'm supposed to believe that this ragtag group somehow made a makeshift boat all the while they are whining at and arguing with each other. I actually like Hope but dial down the angst and drama for once, please! lol It's not all about you. She's the one who dragged Felix and Huck into this mess, now all of a sudden she's mad at them for wanting to go back. Iris is a pretty annoying character too as the actress doesn't do a good job of selling anger. When she intervened in the Hope-Felix argument I laughed for all the wrong reasons. Her acting needs a ton of work. And why does Felix always cry when confronted by one of the teens? This guy is supposed to be a tough, thick-skinned security leader, but he acts like wimp and let's all these emotional teenagers manipulate and shame him every episode. Huck (my favorite character) and Silas are the only 2 characters who came out unscathed in this one, the former because the actress is actually competent and the latter mostly because the writers limited his dialogue and screen time.

I still like this series overall, but this episode is one where I agree with the general fandom that the show can be juvenile at times.
