On a surface level, "Fear Factor" is chiefly remembered as "that gross-out show". That's part of it, obviously, but it is so much more. First of all, it is slickly made and produced - this first episode was made in 2001 but it looks like it could have been made in 2018. And the wide variety of reactions to fear reveal the wide spectrum of human nature. What's also fascinating is the combination of competition and camaraderie between the contestants - in the rat-pit stunt, for example (it's exactly what the title says it will be), they all talk each other through it supportively. You get to root for (or against) people you've only known for a few minutes! I was rooting for Deirdre.....*** out of 4.
